To prorate your plates is not difficult. First you can go down to St Paul and open a pro rate account. Estimate how many miles you will drive in each state, or use their estimates. Keep track of all miles in each state, Also keep track of fuel purchases as you will also need an IFTA account. International Fuel Tax Agreement. Submit report each quarter and pay fuel tax due. Or you can have an agency like Transport Licensing in St Cloud do the work and file the reports for about 55.00 per month. Just keep miles, routes, and fuel purchases, send to them quarterly and they will take care of it. If you prorate, take your current plate and registration with as they should credit the fees already paid on your y plate onto the prorated one. You must also have the 2290 paid receipt (highway use tax) present to get new plates. You are subject to audits on the IFTA and prorate accounts so keep good records for your protection.

I believe you don't even estimate miles anylonger. Most if not all states have gone to a new system on apportioned states

So if you went through a company like the one in St cloud and they do an audit do they go to that company or me as an individual?

I don't know about the company in St. Cloud but I use a company here in Nebraska and I have been audited twice. Both times I called my company and we did the audit in their office. You have to have a company representative present during the audit. Both times they couldn't find anything I was doing wrong. My company does everything for me. They got my ifta all set up at the time and made sure everything was compliant. They notify me a month in advance when a truck or trailer needs inspected, when my physical card or license needs renewed and anything else I need to do when I need to do it. All I do is keep track of miles in each state and where I buy my fuel and any repairs I do and keep track of my hours and they do the rest. I don't have to worry about forgetting to do something.

$50 a month to keep track of two trucks and not having the stress of sitting down and making out reports and worrying about forgetting to renew something or do an inspection is well worth it to me. They only charge $35 a month if you only have one truck. My two cents.

No. Cargo is usually determined by what or who you haul for. The paper work companies are not a bad idea and free you up to do other things. I just happen to have a wife that likes to do it her self.

I have to suggest that by your questions on here, you would probably do better by leasing to another company. Consider Liesmeir Trucking from Litchfield or another carrier. You will learn the business for a while and not make the mistakes many people make when starting. Most of the loads listed on this site, (but not all), are the leftover loads not grabbed by other carriers. Just expressing my opinion, nothing more. Good Luck!
