I have a chance to buy a 08 with 800000 miles regen that has never been taken off or deleted questions I have is it too late to take it off is the internal damage already done if I take it off will this be a million plus mile motor what are my options with this possibly just walk away

well if you delete it. your probably gonna have a head gasket problem in the near future with that many miles. But if you by it cheap enough run it out like it is and dont drive it hard you might get millon miles on it. I have a isx cummins 550hp and it runs good get anywere from 5.5 to high is 6.3 but i haul heavy. if you do delete everything on it dont go over 550hp cause it wont last.

Chances are with 800000 on it, it already has had a head gasket problem and been taken care of. Ive had 4 of them go between 450-515000. One of my owner-ops was looking at one with 560 on it. I told him dont buy, it will have a headgasket problem. If you do buy it, negotiate a warranty on it. Well he bought it, with a warranty on lubricated parts only. 3 weeks later, guess what, headgasket. When they pulled the head, it needed pistons and liners, just like all mine did. He ended with the same deal I did...pay for the parts and they pay for the labor. Essentailly get a rebuild at half price. I know it's not a "full inframe" but it got all the important parts. Give Cummins the serial number and see if they have any records of work being done on it and move from there.

Thank you yes I called Cummins the only thing that has been done to this is a turbo replacement and a EGR assembly. That's what worries me about this motor. Not only that but being an older Peterbilt like this one they still want 50k for it but yet I see Bank repos and salvage trucks with blown Motors all the time for around 20k so I'm kind of up in the air on what to do especially since right now is a buyer's market

I recently bought a 2009 T660 with an ISX for less than 30K.

The 2008 was the first year of the new engines and the new er EPA requirements.. I know that alot of these engines did have problems with the new systems in them.. 50,000seems like alot of money with an engine that will probably cost over 20 thousand to overhaul.. Hate to say it but either a 2007or older or a 2013or newer.. Those have had less down time.. Best of luck.. Jeff

Some of the early 2013 's had problems too. I was told 2014 or newer to be safer.

I just can't figure out why anybody that's makin $2.25+ a runnin mile would even consider anything but a brand new truck? Maybe doing 30 mile hauls??

I agree that the 2008 was a bad year and unless this truck is something special I would pass. 2013 had design changes and while there are some that have inherent problems as a whole they are better than the ones before. I have spent the last month agonizing over buying one and have decided no. In our shop every fleet owner with the 2008 or newer tell me they are a financial disaster. We have multiple clients that are out of business now and we're very successful prior to the emission products. If you do get one the ONLY way is with an aftermarket warranty and then trade when warranty is up. Problem is are the future designs going to be more reliable? My sources at PACCAR say look for it to get worse with OBAMA new mandates

Richard the wife has been begging me to buy a new truck for over a year I just can't justify spending the money on that because they haven't figured out how to make them run correctly and we have the new diesel ingrediont change mandating in 2018 even the trucks that have the gliders in them I can't justify spending the money on them truck with a rebuilt motor doesn't make any sense if it was a new motor that was old stock it would be different but a rebuilt motor in a new truck is not worth $140,000 I get what you're saying

Joe I get what you're saying you would think a guy would be like that but my wife has Health and Welfare on me and my family plus we have a very nice home and lots of nice things I choose to spend money on my family rather than my truck that's why we drive the older trucks and keep them up to date different people different priorities.

Jason, I have an 08 389 with an ISX. When i got the truck two years ago it had the dpf still on the truck. From first hand experience, I can tell you, if you delete it, go all the way. We deleted the DPF only and have spent so much money on the truck its crazy. I rebuilt the motor last August at 811,000. It went thru 3 turbos immediately after. Mechanic said it was foreign made parts causing the problem but Cummins kept warrantying the turbo so it wasnt that big a deal except for downtime. I swore up and down to only buy old Cats. |

I had a 09 pete with isx spent 50,000 on maint. in one year. Its been alot cheaper to run a brand new truck and let perterbilt fix there truck. I wish the loads were paying what they were 2 years ago, could have paid this truck off by now.

I have decided against the cummins. Its either Cat or Detroit. I found a 02 kwt600 with a bad motor c15 and 13spd for 7k truck is running but knocking. I'm gonna reman it myself. So I guess I'm gonna sell my freighshaker if any wants it
