starting problems on 14 liter detroit yet

Posted by a private BulkLoads.com member. replaced old spin on filter with new davco replaced injector seals check valve transfer pump on left side on engine. still takes 15 to 20 seconds of cranking to get it to fire if it sits overnight any ideas other than trade off.

Good chance your getting air in your fuel system . . why did you take off the spin on? many of those big high dollar filters eventually suck air..i remember racor used to be the big boy on the block.. the rubber orings used to let air in..

Easy to see what's in your fuel, good water separation easy to change, you can see when it needs changing easy to prime your engine, electric heater and or heat with water or hot fuel , probably few more advantages that I missed, have had several. Detroit sucking air won't probably start at all. Losing prime , easiest fix that I found was putting a loop in return line.

And Jeff we had a couple of the old racor , they were a pain drove over a thousand miles one time to work on truck that would not run, smeried silcon sealer over all the joints , wires and any place else on racor filter could get to , got truck running when we got it home that was the end of the racor,but have very good luck with Davco,

Check your fuel lines and i can almost bet that you will notice that they are moist from diesel. Another thing is there is a one way valve that does not let fuel drain back to tank that can be bad. It is located right before fuel line runs into head on back side of engine. Good luck.

A loop in the fuel return line , will hold fuel in line between engine and the loop , taking the place of your one way valve that has probably failed but is very hard to change on most trucks. Also sometimes fuel transfer pump slips on shaft , new or not. Lock tight it.
