Who here has started utilizing elds? What is a good cost saving eld that meets all the requirements? Sounds like it is inevitable that we are going to be forced to install these.....

Our rates have went up since we started using ELD's. You will quit giving shit away for free. It also helps that I created an app for me and my guys to bid on profit margins as well. If they would just give us our sleeper birth split and not force us to attach the to our trucks, then Eld's would be the best thing to hit trucking in a long time.

Have not went under yet. Went to the Elogs about two years ago. Hard for a shipper or receiver to argue about the detention. We just email them a copy of the operators logs showing the lost time. Slam dunk, case closed. No more 1000 miles per day, hell on elogs you will find 650 miles to be a hump.

Had demurrage here on 3 loads with eld. Took photos, video and elog of each delay. 1 paid, the other two did not. One said I never seen a demurrage rate that high(per hour). I said trucking isn't cheap

I don't have a specific app per say, I'm am just wondering about if a driver doesn't have a smart phone and can't connect with the system. I am looking dfor a low cost eld system that won't break the bank, but doesn't need the driver to have a smart phone to connect with it.

Might want to look at VDO then. They have one that doesn't require a smart phone or a monthly subscription fee. One time fee to buy the unit and has a printer built into it.

I use Big Road. It's about the same as keep trucking. I agree with Alfred that I don't like it connected to the truck. In my opion it has nothing to do with safety, it's a way for lawyers to gather data to use against the trucking companies in the event you have an accident! I would love to see the split sleeper back.

I tried the app route and tablet connected via smart phone. I wasted my time with both. Spend the coin and go with stand alone unit that stays in the truck. Your results may vary good luck

Stay away from VDO. I had one. Had to throw it out. Not accurate enough. I even had the extending antenna on it. When I would be in Nebraska and enter a fuel purchase it would record it as Iowa even though I was over 10 miles from there. One day I got in my truck after I had shut it down the day before it had showed that I was on duty all night long. It recorded my post trip inspection that I had done but didn't switch it to off duty like it was supposed to. Called support and they said they were working on it. Said they had other complaints. Even the local Peterbilt shop put them in their delivery and company vehicles. I told them they wouldn't like them. They have since pulled them out and switched to other systems. They are a big headache. If I have to put one in my truck at the end of the year, I will spend the money for a good one with good service. Even if there is a monthly fee.

When will these morons figure out this business? I got a trailer repaired last month and got the bill....$4600.00. Now, how would some of these wanna be drivers pencil that in? On $1.05 b.s. per mile????
We have morons hauling haz-Mat for almost that price just to see themselves driving up the road. Unbelievable.

It has to be hooked up to the ecm or it's not legal under the new rules that go into effect at the end of the year. Then you can go make the big bucks!!! Unless your looking for the two year extension

Absolutely correct, if it's not wired into the ecm, it's not compliant. And as for glider kits go, they will not be exempt, because it goes by the year on the title card. And being that a couple hundred thousand glider kits have been built using older motors, someone will have to design a a wire harness that's compatible with the older ecms to bridge the eld and ecm together, or your glider kits will turn into boat anchors.... and if they can wire a eld up to a older ecm on a glider, then they can do the same to a older truck with a electronic motor (So there goes the exemption for older trucks, pre 2000).... It's funny how many people that figure this out, suddenly change their tune about e-logs. The meggafleets that run them now experience very high driver turnover, with 90 days being the average length of time a driver sticks around, before they quit. All Elds will do is spread this disease to the rest of us. As far as rates go, no one can run a truck cheaper than a farmer can, because the truck is just a tax write off for the farm, it doesn't have to make money, and that's what we will compete against, so rates won't go up because of elds. As we go broke and sell our trucks, it's the farmers that will buy them, until the farmers are the only ones left in the market.

Hard wriring in an eld to a glider kit is just like any other truck. No special harness needed. Splice in and go.

Elds under current production are designed for the newer 120 pin ecm. Older ecms used 40 or 70 pin ecm. An interface to adapt would be required ( similar to the one used now to adapt the newer instrument panels to the older ecm) I believe Raytheon has them under production.

Farmers don't need write offs if they aren't making money. Right now they aren't making money with the low commodity prices. You will be able to buy the trucks back from the farmers after all of the farm sales that are gonna be happening next winter if the markets don't improve soon. A lot of farmers are having trouble getting money from the banks now. With the fed hiking interest rates it is gonna get worse.

I don't know where all the misinformation is coming from. Everyone has satellite radio anymore and anyone can do a Google search of fmcsa regs and find what they're looking for on under 2 minutes. I still have guys tell me almost every day, "livestock haulers will be exempt"..... Huh?! Why would livestock haulers be exempt and nobody else? That would be assuming that the feds already know they're lying in the first place!

The under 10 trucks exemption people are talking about is something from 2008 or whatever the last time was that they tried mandating these. There is no such exemption in this reg but there was going to be in the last one

The smart ones that operated strategically will be in a position to grow, they will just buy their neighbors out at wholesale. The bank has to finance someone in order to unload the reposesed property, or else they are stuck with it. So here again no equipment or land will leave the market. Learn from your history, remember the early 1980's? What happened to all of those assets the bank foreclosed on? The larger a farmer grows, the more trucks he buys.

This time is different from the eighties. Most thought high prices were here to stay so they bought high dollar ground and high dollar equipment and expanded their operations. Problem is they got too big now they still gotta make payments. Even if they didn't buy equipment or ground. Inputs like seed and fertilizer and spray and hired help haven't come down much. At $3 corn there isn't much profit for farmers. Especially ones that have to hire help and pay rent on ground. Just because farmers are big and have a lot of stuff like trucks, it doesn't mean that they aren't going bankrupt. Just means the banker hasn't cut them off yet. You can only operate at a loss for so long. If you are going bankrupt trucking, then maybe you need to operate more strategically. I'm making excellent money trucking right now but I strategically parked the hopper and am pulling a different kind of trailer.

You have not shown us why this is different from the 1980's. And you have not explained what happened to all the property that the bank repossessed back in the 1980's. Did it evaporate into the air? Did the earth shrink ? Or did it remain in the market, under new ownership, continuing to be planted and harvested? And where did you get the idea I need to be operating more strategically?

It is different from the eighties because there are gonna be a lot more people involved this time. The ground is still there and it is being farmed. In reality there is actually more being farmed now than in the eighties. Almost a glut of land and way less farmers. I got the idea that you need to be operating more strategically because Everytime there is a forum on here and you comment on it you always bring up that it is the farmer's fault. Why would you complain if your business is not hurting? They were hurting mine until I decided to do something about it, like haul something else. If they want to haul for cheap, let them haul for cheap. Needing a write off is not why they haul cheap. The ones that do haul for cheap are the ones who have nothing better to do and if that is how they want to run their business, there is nothing you or I can do about it. I don't like it as much as the next guy but it is the way it is. Also, their businesses are the reasons us hoppers have anything to haul in the first place. Unless you haul oilfield. If they are doing it legally then that is the way it is.

I challenge you to show me where I ever once said it's the the farmers fault. That is your own interpretation of what was said. I simply stated some facts about the market, and how it's influenced by different factors, including the farm factor. I have only recently mentioned the farmer, since this ELD topic came up. Perhaps you think the farm crisis is different this time because it affects you? It would explain your over emotional behavior. If you think the world is going to stop without you, you should have them change your medication. In 2008 when all these big trucking companies with decades of experience were dropping like flies all around me, I was doing just fine. I am still here and they are not, so I must be doing something right. And by the way, I have family that farms, and they are doing just fine.

Interesting topic. I have 5 friends no using elds. And the one thing everyone of them has said is, it has cost me in payroll. One friend used to be home daily, but now finds himself running out of hours 10-20 miles from home. So he parks on the side of the road until someone from their shop can come get the truck. So now he his late to pick up the kids from school. Most of the guys I know run short runs, and all are unable to finish a run on time at least once or twice a week.
I've just recently started to run enough I need to carry a log book again because of the farmer problem. I'm sure a lot of farmers are driving because their incomes are down too. So sitting in line at the ethanol plants may just be a new way of life. I dont run killer miles, but once in a while you just need an extra 30 min to finish a load. Weathet issues, maybe a traffic tie up. Any one that thinks trucking is this perfect little black and white game is nuts. Its that way with any successfull business. Occasionally you have to work a little extra to handle your customers needs.
I truly fear that shelves will be low on food by March of next year. Farmers or the mills will find it difficult to get feed made, or delivered on time. Getting livestock to market will become problematic. Bottom line, there are not enough drivers to haul it now. And having to have more people touch the product is going to drive prices up. Sure you might be able to demand a better rate, but whats it going to do to prices of the goodz you consume. I don't see any good coming out of this regulation. Geez if drivers and dispatchers cant regulate them selfs, you really think a box is going to solve this?
Thanks for letting me speak.

MY WISH WOULD BE THAT THE 14 HOUR CLOCK COULD BE STOPPED. USUALLY IF I AM BEING DELAYED AT A DOCK OR WASH OUT OR ECT, I WILL GO IN SLEEPER AND REST ANYWAY AND ON HOT SUNNY DAYS IN THE SUMMER WE USUALLY GET TIRED EASIER AND IF WE COULD STOP THE CLOCK I THINK THINGS MIGHT BE A LITTLE SAFER. I DO LIKE THE UNLIMITED 34 HOUR RESTART AND THINK THAT IS GOOD. THE PERSON WHO EVER THOUGHT OF THAT STUPID 1AM TO 5AM RULE SHOULD BE PUT IN A NUT HOME! I WISH SOMEBODY COULD SHOW INSURANCE COMPANIES WHERE THE PROBLEMS MIGHT SHOW UP, BECAUSE I BELIEVE THEY ARE THE ONES WHO ARE TRYING TO MAKE ALL THIS HAPPEN AS FAR AS MANDATORY ELDS. SOME THINGS I BELIEVE WERE SAFER IN 1989 WHEN I STARTED.

Jeff it ain't over till the fat lady sings. I ll take a shot at this...right now theres still 15% of large carriers and 85% of small carriers ARE NOT on elogs...i for one cant wait for the mandate to hit because its gonna cause a domino effect like the industry has never seen, its gonna be the perfect storm, no more rolling warehouse deliver in the nick of time, alot of lowball scum will disappear into the sunset, thus mandate will crash alot sooner tgan obama care did...the mega fleets who have pushed this garbage, you know the ones with half their fleets sitting empty, the other half filled with somalians that shippers and recievers just love dealing with are gonna se the fruits of what THEY have created....they re already finding out that the "new breed" driver isnt going to sit out here on the road up to 90 hours a week and 4-6 weeks at a time for a couple hundred bucks a week... and the public is just going to love all the SAFE drivers the FMCSA has created

What is it with you and farmers? You act like farmers are mega rich and do not need to make a profit. Trust me it isn't just farm trucks running up the road for a bull shit rate. There isn't that many farm trucks on the road to effect the rates. I can cite many examples ,just dont have the time to worry about it. I set my price for a profit and if it works , great if not we dont take the load. Are we struggling , you bet, but eventually we will have these trucks paid for and they wont have a gazillion miles on them because we wont haul just to keep the wolf from the front door.

(1) The Rule is "If you don't Normally have to Log over 8 Days a month, you can use Paper".. Says Nothing about going Out of State. So if you travel withing your 100 mile radius, you can go outside up to 8 days a month, and you still won't have to do E-Logs. (2) If you do "Drive Aways or Tow Aways, where the triler of vehicle is your Cargo, you are exemp (3) If you operate a vehicle that was Manufactured Prior to the year 2000, you are exemp.

Something that I have not seen mentioned about using an app on your phone. When you turn your phone over to an officer for revue, He can look if you have been texting or emailing while your log says you were driving. I use a a seperate small tablet for that. I know a guy that was fined like $2800 for texting while driving becouse the officer looked at it on his phone. As I understand it, when you hand it to law inforcement, you give them the right to look at texting.

My app is not on my phone it's on a tablet. I have only had one officer even look at it anyway. Put it on inspection and flip thru the pages easy as that. No texts on it or phone calls.
