Contact your state apportioned plate office, they will walk you through it. it's very easy and not worth paying someone to do it.

That would be the State IRP / IFTA office. Gotta have both, and they are together.

I live in North Dakota, where talking to a human is as easy as picking up the phone. I had my Temp IRP/Temp IFTA in 24 hours and my plate/stickers in about 3 days.

I have a business relationship with a guy in California. They don't do anything online, everything is mail in (is what he told me). Make a mistake and you'd have resubmit via mail. What took me 24 hours in ND could potentionally take 2-3 weeks in California if you don't make a mistake on the paperwork.

He ended up just getting my plate instead of a california plate. So he has a REG ONLY plate here.

It's really not hard to do. It didn't take me anytime at all and I had never done it before, let alone for an out of state truck leasing on to me.

Easy as popping into your local tag office that is full service. Bring in Your usual info. You make an irp account . They hand you tags. If you have your own authority you will of course need your own ifta account as well. In kansas a temp ifta can be got online. Just in case the computer system has not processed your payment etc... just make an ifta account before going in I think would be good idea.

Be glad you don't live in Michigan. You have to get a USDOT number, your FEIN number, a MC number, pay the Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (IRS form 2290), provide proof of residency and owndership of vehicle, proof of insurance, THEN you can open an IRP account to actually get the plate. Whew! Plus if you live here and haul point to point here, you have to apply for intrastate authority to go along with your interstate authority. After all that, hopefully you still have enough change under the couch cusions to put some fuel in the tank and go to work. I wish you success on this journey!! God bless and be safe out there!
