Morning Y'all! Seems like there is tons out there in terms of quoting Dry Van, Flatbeds, Reefers, etc. But, does anyone know what the current rates are for Liquid Tankers? Specifficaly Fertilzer and Non-Hazmat Chemicals? Would you charge more if offering Insulation/Heat in Transit?

First off. the tanker freight is getting to be like the hopper rates....Soooo many people are getting in the liquid lanes. But, thats the way it goes. I know some people are bottom feeders, again, just like most grain lanes, are way too cheap. I don't know how some carriers can do it for what they charge. My suggestion, would be to call Koch in Wichita, and talk to the transportation people, and get a BASE from them. That doesn't mean you need to haul at that price, but most carriers just do what Koch wants, without negociations. But that will give you an idea of where the numbers are. Figure all your expenses for the year, and miles too, and thn run numbers and see where you need to be...AND pay yourself a decent wage!!! Don't settle for mediocre. But you better be south of $2.00 by quite a waze.

Coming into spring, you should be ok. Are you gonna haul fertilizer, or product that needs heat? Better find out if insulated trailer is worth it. I don't think it is but thats just me. And remember, it's a dawg eating world, so all you have is your word, and services.

Appreciate the response sir. We're small, only 4 OTR currently. Seems at times like there is just a wall out there getting in the way of finding the work. I know it's out there, and I know the shippers and customers are probaly saying the same thing, asking where the drivers are. Just seems like something is broken when If we can't connect. Not meaning to be so negative, been in this industry for a decade now, guess I'm just addicted to the pain at times :)

It was extremely hard for me to find the bright place and contacts that aren’t just cheep. I hauled local sand and stone for 20 yrs. it made me a great living. Then like most things all the bottom feeders came out. I got into the oilfield for a little bit nthen flatbed then van and the pay was midoicre at best. I got into the tank world and it was a struggle too but I kept seeing some really nice Equipment running down the road and was confident they weren’t running for what I was. I stayed at it run some crazy hrs and when some new people called and needed stuff right away I chaeged them accordingly. All those people where happy that I got them out of a bind. I still get occasional panic call from other customers that dont use me that much. I give my customers that work me regularly one rate Which is still really good. I have a call me at the last minute rate as well which is really high. Rates still go up and down with my customers from year to year because of the demand. You have to be able to be flexable when that happens. You will always have cheep customers that will never pay great. usually they are the ones that have a lot of work. Keep using them until you have established good customers. They are a necessary evil.

I like to Keep newer equupment which means the cost is higher. Figure out your expence for that and adjust you rtae accordingly. I hope this helps. I have a whole way that I do rates. I just don't tell evryone what it is and no one else should either.

As Dave said, call those he listed, and try the Helena, and Simplot locations near you. They will also give you their pay scale. The non haz chemical side is a totally different animal. If you talk to some of the brokers using Bulkloads, they will tell you the market is down right now, and to a small degree it is from the rates we saw last summer. However, they are not as down as bad as many would like you to believe. Finally, do not go by the rates Schneider posts on here. They are ridiculously low. As far as accessorials go, those fees are all ovr the place. You will spend over $10,000 for all the tanker equipment you will need to be competitive. It's up to you to figure what it's worth to you. Some people charge a pump off fee, and others don't if the rate is good enough. I've had my pump for almost a year and have never used it and hopefully won't have to. I do use the compressor.

You'll learn the lanes pretty quickly. Try to stay north of $4 on most lanes, coming back from the east coast or Texas can be lower or higher depending on demand. The nice part is a lot of brokers well offer their carriers loads before their posted on a board. I tend to stay away from fert loads until they get desperate and the rates come up.

I live in Oklahoma I haven’t started pulling tanker yet but I’ve been talking to a company about leasing on and they pull non-hazmat tanker‘s and their rates start at 5:35 up to six dollars a mile plus fuel surcharge
