Surface corrosion on mild steel

Living in Arizona we don't have a lot of rust concerns. Hoping there are suggestions for rust on trailer frame rails, mild steel. I want to knock off surface rust and apply a color coating, but of course i can't spend the time to sand it to get it perfectly smooth and corrosion free. Any thoughts on a coating? Art Pfluger

Hello Art , hope all is well In AZ. We had some liquid solvent we got from Napa. You sprayed it on and let it it set for awhile. The longer it was on the stronger the results. It works very well. We used pressure washer to remove the solvent and flackey steel . It would clean steel up nicely . I'm sorry though I don't remember the brand name . Napa may be able to tell you or have a Napa brand.

Eastwood Corporation used to make a rust encapsulator that would allow a person to paint over rust. paint it on good and heavy then apply the color. It used to work farily well. the product would convert into a primer and stop the rust.
