Just so it's clear to begin with. I am in NO WAY lumping all the folks with triples and quads in one group. If you feel what I'm gonna say is directed towards you, more than likely you have enabled this problem at one time or another. I'm sure everyone started out with good intentions when they decided to buy a big wagon. I'm sure you all planned on making more money than what you were with the old tandem. Why go spend another $10k-$15k+ more for the big wagon if you wasn't gonna make more money? Right? Somewhere along the way one of you folks got pushed over on the rate. That customer you have had for years stabbed you in the back. When the bill you were sending them instantly jumped one week, red flags flew. So the numbers cruncher looked into it and found the reason for the increase. I'm sure at 1st it didn't bother them knowing they had a higher truckin bill. Why would it bother them? The rate didn't go up and more product was being moved. Win win right? That day came where that wasn't good enough anymore. Let's say you have $30 on the rate. 25t on the old tandem put at $750/load. 30t on the big wagon $900/load. Now that number cruncher comes along looking for a way to cut cost for that loyal customer. What do they see right there in black and white. That $150 difference per load. Big money saver right there. $39000/yr @ 5 loads a week in savings? Here's where that domino fell. For fear of losing that loyal customer you agreed to a lesser rate. So you let them cut $5t off the rate. According to them you were doing great hauling 25t for $750 so why would it be any different hauling 30t for $750. That good idea of making more money just went out the window. Now just hauling more weight for a cheaper rate. No better off than where you were with the tandem. That 1st domino that fell didn't just hurt the big wagons, little wagons are along for the ride to. Seems certain shippers are trying to push out the 25t guys. Especially when the rate is barely $2/mi on 30t. I'm sure this is gonna strike a nerve with some. The ones that it strikes a nerve with, probably a safe bet they are one of the fallen dominoes. The ones that justify it by saying "I'm saving my customer money", I just don't understand. That customer don't care about saving you money. I'm sure they would tell you to go back to a tandem at the original rate if they did care. But hell no they don't, they found a fool that was willing to take on a bigger cost for their operation that cut the cost of theirs. Some of you need to quit being that fool. The rest of us would appreciate that. |

True, In Florida with O/W Permit you can Haul
Gw 88,000 local , sounds good but In fine with 80,000 / 25tons only
Well some brokers give you the first load example
$33/ton by 30 tons on truck =$990.00, but when they find out you can haul 30 tons , they just says ( aaahhh uuuummm is slow
I call you right back , and lie ooooo uuuumm the customer want to pay $29/ton
$29x 30= $870.00
$990-$870= $120 per load
Remember if you go from Tallahassee to Miami will take you 2 days running local with 88,000 LOL you can’t take I95/I75
In fine with 24.9 tons Interstate coffe on hand
Nothing personal with brokers Its just business

Bingo! Point made without even mentioning the "B" word. I see one has already hit you with a downvote. |

There has to be an incentive for hauling heavy. Otherwise I WILL NOT. Just my opinion, but it doesn't make any sense to me to wear my truck out faster for the same price. |

In North Dakota with 6 axles we can go to 94,000 or with 7 axles to 105,500. Sounds good from the outside. More maintanance, more tires, more fuel. in reality. Tandem runnig long haul makes as much or more at the end of the day with less outgo.

You lock a bunch of dogs in a cage for a week and don’t feed them, and then toss a small piece of meat in there, and watch them destroy each other trying to get it so they can survive another day, and that’s a crime, but you do it to truckers and it’s considered entertainment. One day that dog doesn’t go for the meat, he goes for your throat because he’s gone mad with rage.

we put figures to it 6 years ago when we lost some contracts to the big tarilers, one all pencilled in we figured about $8000 a year more revenue with the triple axle, but with twice the wear and tare with the extra weight i figured we would stay with the tandems

I see it must have struck a nerve with 2 now. I don't see what there is to dislike about what I said unless they are one of the guilty. I figured this could be a touchy subject. That's the reason I made it clear to begin with that I wasn't lumping all of them into one group. Figured that would keep the good ones from thinking I was directing it their way. I have nothing against a big wagon at all. Hell I'd be open to pull one for the right reasons. But what is the incentive if you end up with a lower rate? Be a foolish way to feed your ego if that's what it's about.

not true. if you run superb you can load tridem wieghts with a permit instead of just tandem and if the farmer can get a permit and you are close to the border perhaps even 42mt so its sometimes to the trucks advantage to have overweight permits. i dont really understand why you think a broker makes more money on a tonnage hauled load with the same rate. |

I really have not seen to much of my regular freight being discounted for hauling heavy. Mostly the reason I am on 7 is customer demand for volume of products. I now haul 6.3 loads in 5 trips. I get to make more money, and I can fill the customers volume demands. There have been a few shippers that cut rates, then they went back up when they could not get the volume hauled at low rates. I think in the feed business, that rates will get better because they are feeding so many more animals. They have to get the feed there somehow, bigger rigs is the only choice. They cost more to own, more to opperate, and I believe the large volume customers understand that. You pay for what you get. The better the service, the better the pay. |

I think the reason the permit can benefit a broker, is when ignorant people take the per ton rate cheaper, just because there's more weight. On the triple being considered "big"....many states here dont allow doubles, or weights over 80000 pounds. Not to get political.....but it's only certain states.....

My biggest concern with hauling heavy is the loading and unloading time. A shipper or receiver who can't efficiently load/unload a 25 ton load in 30 min should have no business with heavier loads. Admit it we've all been there. Yes the waiting time thing rears its nasty head AGAIN. I Could go on and on but i will stop.
