Your authority is your DOT carrier numbers. No real way to get around it legally.

Authority is not realley your DOT number, it is your MC number, wich you need to operate.

MC number is what you are recognized nationwide by and what givesyou authority to haul interstate freight. DOT number is state specific.

I HAVE A STATE AUTHORITY # A FEDERAL DOT # AND A MC#. START WITH YOUR STATE OFFICE MOST WEB STATE WEB SITES AND PHONE NUMBERS ARE IN YOUR RAND MCNALLY TRUCKER ATLAS. ONCE YOU GET TO THE CORRECT PERSON AT THE STATE LEVEL THEY CAN DIRECT YOU ON PROCEDURES FROM THERE. KANSAS HAS A CLASS YOU HAVE TO GO THROUGH BEFORE YOU CAN DO ANYTHING ELSE(UNSURE ABOUT OTHER STATES) IF YOU NEVER LEAVE YOUR STATE ALL U NEED IS INTRASTATE AUTHORITY BUT IF YOU TRAVELL MULTIPLE STATES YOU WILL NEED A FED#. ALSO YOU WILL NEED TO GET WITH SOMEONE TO BE A PROCESS AGENT FOR YOU(BOC-3) I CHOSE TO HAVE OOIDA DO IT FOR ME AS ITS A FREE SERVICE TO MEMBERS. YOU WILL NEED TO CARRY INSURANCEFOR ABOUT 30-45DAYS BEFORE FEDS WILL ISSUE AUTHORITY. YOU WILL NEED TO FILE WITH IFTA AND UCR BEFORE YOU WILL BE ABLE TO OPERATE LEGALLY. THE FEDERAL WEBSITE FOR AUTHORITY IS FMCSA.DOT.GOV I SUGGEST THAT IF YOU REAAALLLLLYY WANT TO BE YOUR OWN AUTHORITY HOLDER GO THROUGH THE PROCESS ON YOUR OWN, DO NOT PAY HUNDREDS OF $ FOR SOMEONE TO DO IT FOR YOU.(BLAST ME IF YOU FEEL THE NEED) BUT IF YOU ARE NOT INTELLEGENT ENOUGH TO WALK YOURSELF THROUGH THE PROCESS YOU WILL STRUGGLE EVERYTIME YOUR IFTA FILINGS, TAG RENEWALS, UCR, HHUT, ADDING A STATE, UNDERSTANDING AN AUDITING FROM YOUR STATE ECT ECT OCCURS. IF THIS SOUNDS OVERWHELMING I AM SORRY, JUST BEING TRUTHFUL.ITS NOT ROCKET SCIENCE BUT ITS A REWARDING AND TIME CONSUMING PROCESS BEING YOUR OWN BOSS, AUTHORITY HOLDER, DRIVER, DISPATCHER, SECRETARY, COLLECTIONS AGENT, PUBLIC RELATIONS SPECIALIST, MECHANIC & AND ANY OTHER TITLE YOU SEE FIT TO ADD TO THIS LIST.

your dot number is what the scale people and dot go by. when they type that into there computer all your other numbers come up on there screen. dot number is the only number you have to have on your truck.

ONCE AGIAN MISS INFORMATION I LOVE IT OOOO WELL. YOU BETTER HAVE YOUR US DOT# MC# AND STATE DOT# POSTED

You only have to have your UDSOT no. on the side of your truck anymore. Kentucky has a form to tie your KYU no. into your US DOT no.

What states give thier own #? your US DOT # is for safety every truck on the road is supposed to have a US DOT # even a pickup truck if it is used for a bussiness that includes farming. A person may haul exempt commodities with only a US DOT # interstate ( accross state lines), exempt commodities are grain, livestock, rock , and coal, there are probably some more that I missed but those are the main ones. If you have a MC # your registered with the federal motor carrier administration and have authority to haul all commodities intersate that are non-hazardous. HAZ MAT requires another # I think but I don't have this. Yes I guess kentucky still requires a KYU number for their milage tax and Oregon also requires a special plate or number but if you have a MC # you are only required to display your registered name (as FMSCA has it on file) and your MC# on your truck no town or state. If you haul intrastate (inside any state without crossing a line)
you need to check with that state and see if they require any special authority or permits to do this. If you don't cross a state-line your are under that state's jurisdiction instead of the federal rules!

States like TX require a TX DOT number if you haul a load that has a TX origin, and destination. All that is required to be on the side of your truck, is your usdot number, and company name. It has to be visible from 50 ft. Some states like to see your vin, like CO. The best thing for anyone to do is to check with your own state dot.

DOT needs to be posted, your MC doesn't but you need to carry proof that you have it. It's not misinformation just the facts.

You do realize that you come off sounding more ignorant, (sorry that means stupid if the word was too big) than the rest of the guys here. Just because you claim to know it all but yet don't or can't post any info to help out and instead just mock (means make fun of) people that actually know or are at least willing to help out doesn't help your case at all, at least when I'm at a truck stop and here some know it all driver yelling above everyone else and embarressing himself and the ones with him I'll know who it is.

click on the link that says registration under fmcsa services a dot# is all you need to haul exempt comodities.it is free if you want to haul other types of freight not listed as exempt and you plan on crossing state lines you will need authority as a contract or common carrier thats your mc# that cost $300 to obtain also the permits you used to need obtain to travel in each of the states called a ssr or single state registration no longer exist. now you need to complete a ucr or united carrier registration.plus you will need what they call registerd agents you will need them to file your BOC-1 the cost for that is about $30 if you use the right people like http://www.evilsizor.com/ of course you will need ifta stickers you get those from your state revenue dept. thats just so you can file your quarterly fuel tax.
but if your just hauling exempt commoditiesthen a DOT# will do just fine.the fmcsa web site will guide you ask you questions then tell you what you need to do.
good luck
