Are we in the clear yet?

A sense of calm has returned to grain and soy markets overnight as we appear to have weathered the latest tempest of Covid-19 risk-off selling. Now, if we have actually sailed beyond the worst of the storms or are just in the eye of the hurricane is yet to be determined, but at least the peace can allow our stomachs to settle a bit as we wait to find out. At a bare minimum, in this era when any part of the globe is within less than a day’s journey, this latest outbreak is a test as to how the world will react to a contagious and previously unknown virus and is an opportunity to learn from what was done well and what was not. It is also a reminder that there are always black swans floating around on the global lake ready to take flight, and for those who have become too complacent in believing nothing can change, it will be a rude awakening when they launch into the skies.
