Heavy rain halts planting, causes problems for early crops

One year after over 90 percent of Kansas was rated abnormally dry and nearly 50 percent of the state was in severe drought, farmers are finding fish in their fields. A rainy May brought thunderstorms, tornadoes and swelling rivers to Kansas, along with water collecting or spilling over onto farmland. Areas of south-central Kansas recorded over 10 inches of rain during the month, most of it falling over the last two weeks. Hard rain and standing water have delayed planting progress, and raise potential concerns for sprouting crops.
