National Farmers Union says Passing Bill C-49 Won't Help Farmers

Mar 08, 2018 at 10:51 AM CST

As the senate looks over Bill C-49 -- the bill to amend Canada's Transportation Act and other related acts -- the National Farmers Union (NFU) is calling for amendments to the bill before it reaches senate for a final vote.

Some producers and groups are saying the bill could solve the problem of rail backlogs for farmers, at least temporarily.

Hanley area farmer and NFU's 2nd Vice President, Cam Goff said as it stands now, the bill is unlikely to provide any relief to farmers, but will actually weaken the position of farmers.
