Trucking May Enjoy Lower Costs, But Lots More Traffic

Trucking in the United States would seem to be wielding some powerful weapons in its traditional competition with rail. Driverless trucks and multiple truck platoons (with one driver controlling two to three trucks remotely) are already being tested on highways, while truck manufacturers are working to develop more fuel-efficient “super trucks.” These technological advances are expected to cut operating costs for truckers by as much as 40% over the next 10 to 15 years by addressing the industry’s two most significant expenses — fuel and labor.
