Is it worth it to buy a 48ft 10'2 spead vs 42 foot tandem?

The 48 spread will cost more to purchase than a 42 close tandem. ($10, 000 to $15,000) The maintenance will be more too. Wheel seals and tires mainly. The real question is what are you hauling? Do you need volume or weight capicity? Are you trying to beat the weight laws? I find that most rates are base on 52000. So anything over is gravey in my pocket. I can carry 53000 legally. (80,000 playing with fuel) with a 43 close tandem. This is rare in industry. But of course there are guy's that can do better than that. I am guessing I could haul 56000 with a spread.(85500) Do the math over a year it could be worth it. But what I do see is a lot of guy's with big KW and Petes that can only carry 54000 at 85500. If you run interstate Highways you can only be 80,000. OK is limiting some highway to 80000, like 412 that use to be 86000. So what I am saying is " this is about making money" So squeeze the most out of it you can.

in my research I found the trailers to be about $5-$8000 more and only about 3-500# heavier. Just be sure the spread is big enough to haul the extra weight. I bought a used one to try it out and its not big enough to haul the big loads of some of the lighter stuff
