Spot Market Rates

I figured in order to help some of you out that I would post the daily spot market rates for freight according to a database that I am a member of;

May 15, 2015

Flatbed: $2.51
Dry Van: $2.33
Reefer: $2.62
Heavy Haul: $$2.65 (no way)
Hopper: $1.45 (no way)

That being said and done, I will post this daily when I get a chance. If the rest of you all think this is a bad idea then let me know. It is your job to get the rates up to where you need them. I will let you know that my hopper is moving between $2.33- $2.85 per mile all miles. So these numbers are not my company's but the nationwide average.

Liked it better when my dry vans were moving at $2.55-$2.75 per mile and my hoppers at $3.25-$4.00 or more.

Alfred,
I don't know if your database specifies if those rates are to the broker/trucking company or to the truck itself. I'd guess it must include the broker's cut because I have a flatbed too, and last time I was out with it anything that posted at $2 to the truck was gone in 2 or 3 minutes. The only people offering $2.50-3.00 had loads that were either 200 miles or going to Colorado. My hopper is parked for now and I'm only able to find about 50% of what I've been used to with the flatbed. We farm a little too and thank God for the rain we had this week, as it was beginning to look like neither business was going to amount to much this year. I have lost $50-100/load over last years rates on some of the flatbed loads, and they weren't prime lanes that the big carriers wanted at the time. Now they do, because it's either that or let their trucks sit. There was a hopper load posted here a couple of days ago from close to home here to northeast Ohio, a nice 1000 mi. run. I called on it and the rate was $1.80 or so, didn't last long either. Interestingly, diesel fuel here locally has been up even though many of us aren't working anywhere near full steam. Nobody has an answer or sees light at the end of the tunnel, so I guess it's every man for himself as far as knowing if he should work or stay home.

I deal with a couple of brokers and they will flat out tell me that they like to play games with truckers to see how cheap they can get the freight they bet each other in the office who can get the cheapest rate done per day or per week so I don't want to hear that rates are bad because of this and because of that these guys will laugh and play on the phone and this is a business I don't blame them if I can find stupid people to haul ridiculously cheap I would also profit is king in this business nobody is your friend

Spot Rates as of close of business on Friday 05/15/15

Flatbed: $2.46
Dry Van: $2.25
Reefer: $2.54
Heavy Haul: $$2.54 (no way)
Hopper: $1.43 (no way)

Looks to be going down instead of up. Price of fuel on the other hand is going up not down?????

I assume these rates are all in, no fuel. Am I correct?

Yes they are all in, unless your rate sheet specifies otherwise. I once again want you to understand that these are nationwide averages and are not necessarily what our trucks haul for.

Spot Rates as of Close of Market on 05/19/15

Flatbed: $2.41 (+.02)
Dry Van: $2.28 (-.02 )
Reefer: $2.70 (+.01)
Heavy Haul: $$2.51 (no way) (+.01)
Hopper: $1.52 (no way)(+.05)

Starting to see a little movement in the Hopper sector, reefer is doing pretty well, but it is that time of year for that. Flatbed should be picking up as well once the rains let up. I am surprised that the Heavy Haul sector in not moving up at a greater rate. This means to me that construction projects are slowing a little. Should not surprise me though, as we are getting ready for an election year and investers get quite stand-offish during that period.

Well guys, my give a damn got busted. I had a supposed friend that was struggling with his reefer, so he asked if he could come run my hopper. I told him that now was not a good time. He was persistent so I said what the hell, I will give it a shot with him. He got over here to KC and I showed him how the hopper worked on some local corn loads at $1.95 per mile. I then sent him on a $5.50 per mile meal load and all he did was gripe and complain. I then gave him a piggy back load with a customer of mine that was going to average $2.25 per mile all miles. He could not get past the fact that he would have to haul some wheat in Western Kansas for $1.05 per mile for 100 miles. He did not understand what the piggy back meant. He decided to deadhead 450 miles back to KC, pulled some more corn, than I got him a load of meal to IN for $2.33 per mile, and then he deadheaded 250 miles to his house. This morning after he sat at home for four days I booked him a load of DDG at $2.45 per mile fully expecting him to haul it after he said he would. Guess what? He calls me at 17:30 tonight telling me he is going back to reefer. I told him that's ok just bring my hopper back in and pay me what you owe me. Now he has came over and sh** in my sandbox and he is turning tail and running. That's ok, I just learned again not to help supposed friends in business. So I will not be posting anymore spot market rates, and I am sure as hell not going to post what the shipper's cost is as well. You see I know what those rates are because I used to be the shipper and the broker. So I will just keep that to myself because I believe that you so called honorable truckers and brokers will just use those numbers to further erode the marketplace and screw all the real honorable truckers and brokers in the process. In the end I and others who understand the market, know the numbers, and know how to not hyperextend ourselves with debt. We will be the ones that will prosper when the rest of you ragbags are gone. Damn that sucks from all his deadheading i dont think he really understood the hopper side and just wanted to play around til things looked good again on his end i think things are bad because of the fallout in the oil market and its a election yr and we all know that major shipper out of Iowa that has those poor heavy haul rates
