Calyxt, a Minnesota company, has developed a non-GMO variety of soybeans that produce a high oleic soybean oil that has no trans fat, less saturated fat and a longer shelf life and fry life than regular soybean oil. This variety is gaining popularity especially since elevators offer a price premium over Chicago prices for the beans. Agtegra offers harvest delivery options at its Kennebec and St. Lawrence facilities. The real issue is growing the market for the beans by making restaurants and food manufacturers aware of the benefits of the high oleic oil. This will take time. Once the demand is there, you can bet production and infrastructure will follow.
