Congratulations on a very well-balanced editorial where you acknowledged the fear that the farmers have that most of the benefits of "freeing the markets" will accrue to the large grain handlers like Cargill, Richardsons and Viterra. For the first two, we will never know how much their revenues increase as they are private companies and therefore have no obligation to shareholders to provide a financial statement to the public but only to the families that hold them privately.
WICHITA, Kan. -- A survivor of a deadly grain elevator explosion in Atchison remains at a Kansas City hospital, while another has been released. The University of Kansas Hospital said Monday that Pat Maxwell remains in critical condition. The other survivor, Clinton Ellerman, was released Friday evening. The two victims were injured in the Oct. 29 explosion at the Bartlett Grain Co. elevator in Atchison that killed six others.
Agricultural processor Archer Daniels Midland Co. said Friday that its senior executive vice president of performance and growth, Steven Mills, will be retiring Feb. 7. Mills began working at ADM in 1979 and has worked in a number of senior treasury and accounting positions. He was named executive vice president and chief financial officer in 2008 and assumed his current post late last year. ADM shares fell 64 cents to $28.73 in afternoon trading.
The Biofuels Digest Index™ (BDI), a basket of public biofuels stocks, jumped 2.80 percent to 74.78 on a broad surge in biofuels equities. For the day, Archer Daniels Midland (ADM) recovered 2.66 percent to $28.90, while Rentech (RTK) soared 18.33 percent to $1.42. Among other equities, Valero (VLO) soared 15.16 percent to $25.15 on rumors of a takeover offer from India's Reliance Industries.. Overall, declines led advances 10 for 1 for the day.
WEBSTER CITY, Iowa-- Grain has poured from an elevator near Webster City after an unloading shoot was struck by a semitrailer. KCCI-TV reported (http://bit.ly/tPZXCl ) the accident happened Tuesday at the United Co-op in Hamilton County. Crews were working to plug the hole to stop more grain from spilling out.
