BYHALIA, Miss. -- Officials say there was an explosion at the Cargill Animal Nutrition feed plant in north Mississippi, but it didn't cause a fire and nobody was injured. Tim Loesch, a Cargill spokesman, said the cause of Friday's explosion at the plant in Byhalia is under investigation. He said all employees were evacuated immediately and the local fire department responded and began an investigation into the cause. The plant in north Mississippi make feed for animals.
Cargill Inc. Chief Executive Greg Page estimates some 2.5 million acres of corn have been lost as a result of heavy rains and flooding in the U.S., which have meant farmers planted significantly less than intended, the Financial Times reported on its website Monday. "Clearly we have lost acres with the flooding," Page told the FT, although he cautioned that the ultimate size of the U.S. corn crop was still uncertain.
