Trucking heavyweight Schneider National Inc. has pulled out San Antonio, dropping its business of hauling sand for Eagle Ford Shale oilfield service companies.
Green Bay, Wis.-based Schneider has closed its San Antonio yard at Interstate Highway 37 and Loop 1604 and notified the Texas Workforce Commission it cut 76 positions here, mostly drivers.
“Like all companies, Schneider National’s business is heavily influenced by demand in the marketplace,” Schneider spokeswoman Janet Bonkowski said in an emailed statement. “Earlier this year, we decided that the opportunities in the (sand) portion of our energy transportation business are not as strong as anticipated and ceased offering transportation services to this market.”
Oilfield services firms use specialized sand — called “frac sand” or “proppant” — during the hydraulic fracturing process to keep open fissures in rock so oil can flow.
Schneider’s San Antonio workers were given the opportunity to take positions elsewhere in the company, Bonkowski said via email. However, she wouldn’t say how many relocated.
“We worked with all associates affected to find other roles within the company, with a goal to retain as many associates as roles and qualifications allow,” she said.
While Schneider has exited the sand-delivery business here, its bulk division will continue to carry crude oil, condensate and brine water from wells, Bonkowski said.
Earlier this year, Schneider said it planned to hire up to 200 drivers in the San Antonio area.
