I have only seen a handful of TQL loads (flatbed side of things) that had any decent money on them. From what I can tell it seems they, and many other megabrokers, operate by the Walmart philosophy. They aim to cover a large volume of loads (that are lower end to begin with), at whatever margin they can squeeze out of the little that is there. The loads tend to be pretty ordinary in nature, and not require anything special from the driver other than to getting it from A to B in a reasonable time. The smaller, service oriented brokers often move only a few loads a week but do it for customers who are willing to (or have to) pay for SERVICE, because they don't ship enough volume to attract the major carriers or megabrokers. Those shippers often are in higher margin freight and care more about their customers. They want timliness, communication, and a driver that knows how to be respectful to people and handle himself when things are difficult loading or unloading. Those are the folks you and I want to deal with, but it's getting harder all the time for them to compete too. I see it like this- if a broker has no equipment of their own, their standard for a rate to the shipper is whatever they can get someone to haul it for on a repeat basis. The shippers love it because they don't want to pay anyway. Now, the other type of non-capacity brokerage is the kind that fields the last minute emergency call when the shipper realizes that TQL isn't going to get it covered after they said they would. That person will get you YOUR price, but you may only see that load once in you career. The best results for me come with brokering loads from other trucking companies. Their rates are generally acceptable since they'd have to put their own truck under it if they can't get it covered.
