You truck owners are business men. We are in this to make a living and a return on our investment. Know your fuel costs at least. I might be difficult to some of my shippers when it apllies to poor rates, but business is business and friends are friends. So we take good rates and bounce back for another load so the truck is back home again making it a bad rate on the round. We also take a good rates out and a really bad rate back so the are home for the weekend. You need to truck to make money..But you need to do it wisely and be able to say NO. You need to figure out where the cheap lanes are and try not to go there...Unless the load pays you well enough for you to bounce out a long way...Two words for the day...THINK and NO..If everbody says NO to the cheap freight...It will not get moved....I have found that the more the freight pays the less hassels and nicer people and the less freight claims....Do you like dealing with jerks or nice and freight claims or not...Now do you want to be like a flash in the pan or do you want to be doing this 40 years down the road with nice equipment...A lttle story... There is nothing any of us can do about the big boys. No matter how much we complain, nothing we can do. They were smart enough to find themselves a nitch in the market. Which is all were really trying to do, they just did it in different times than we are currently in.all of those big guys at one time were small, but they thought different than most of us. Instead of thinking about dream trucks and taking vacations they put there heads down and ran straight to their goals. It is still possible its just much much harder. The only thing we can really look at is the past how did they fix things 40 years ago? They stood together and made a difference. There is power in numbers, which is one of the hardest things to get in the current age. We all have familys and different circumstances that affect our bottom line. Weather we can shut down or not, its not fair to anyone to say he can't go to work if thats the only way to feed his children. I'm only thirty years old not a whole lot of life experience, but have been raised around trucks all my life. The way I see it ,is the weak will run themselves out of business and the strong will survive. Barely but will get through it. Were in a age where we have almost no control, and things change yearly, but we half to accept that we did vote all of the law makers into office. We dont half to buy new equiptment, its nice but its expensive and less reliable, and cost more per mile to operate. We need to find ways to streamline our operations like the big boys. If we cant do certain things because of emisions or enter certain states, let the big boys have it. Let them spend the money, see if they absorb the amount of work and logistics. Boys these rates suck! I don't know if we can get this done or not, but i say we try to stop every truck in U.S. April 1. Show them brokers and shippers and people raising fuel price.
