FMCSA Audits
So we had our 6 month safety audit last week. Only been in business a few months now. We did pretty well, however sure glad it was a non fine audit that was educational. So the trooper was telling me about a local company that just got fined just under $20,000 for mostly driver logs. So this company has 5 trucks. The fine is $3800/truck/driver. So through the employee pool i would say you have the same percentage of drivers who mess up on their logs accidently or on purpose, either way you put that $3800/truck on a company that has 4000 trucks and what do you get? $15 million. Never heard of a large corporation getting fined anything like that. Nothing says lets eliminate the small guys more then this. I knew that this industry was highly regulated but seriously there is such a thing as overkill.
More and More regulations with brokers and shippers freight rates cheaper and cheaper. Found in the few months we have been running the best rates are coming from brokers that also run their own trucks. They seam to be the only ones that understand what it trulely takes to turn the wheeels on a truck. If you dont have any skin in the game you dont really understand or care for that matter. As long as you can make your margin brokering the freight what do you care, you go home at night and rest easy, while the rest of us are trying to figure out how to stay a float. Brokers and shippers remember the hand that feeds you can and will be the hand that starves you if you dont take care of that hand.
