Load from Perryton Texas to Plainview Texas, 190 miles hauling grain sorghum(milo). At .50 cents a bushel, truck carrying more or less 52,000lbs. 52,000lbs/56lbs gives us our 928.56 bushels. Then .50cents * 928.56 bushels gives us our dollar amount of $464.28. You still have to figure in diesel which 190 miles, truck gets around 5 miles a gallon, around 38 gals of fuel consumed from point A to B. 38gals at $3.17 avg, $120.46 waisted in fuel one way if you go round trip you waist $240.92 so $240.92 in fuel minus your earnings of the load $464.28 we are left with $223.36. drove a total of 380 miles. any opinions good bad i personally think bad", "contentHtml": "\r\n\tUse this as an example of what im asking. You need a return trip somewhat close to reduce your empty miles. Now I'll tell you what my shippers tell me, And I have been in the grain hauling busness about 20 years. First, there paying you $2.45 a loaded mile to deliver there load, if you come back empty thats your problem. A little cheap for here in Illinois, but here in Illinois 190 miles is a pretty good haul for raw ag commodities. If they want you dedicated to haul there sorghum they need to up the rate. Second ,If your going to stay with grain hauling you need a truck and trailer that will maximize your earnings, If I hauled that same trip with my International 9400 daycab and Cornhusker trailer, 56,000# net and 7.10 mpg I would net about $73.00 more per load. I started out just like you, over the road truck that I started hauling grain with, wondering how I was going to make a living at it, I just keeped lightning up the truck and trailer and working on fuel economy and respectfully nagging about the rates.
