Everyone on here seems to talk about 'sticking together', and 'you need to know your cost of operation'. It's apparent to me that Michael DOES know his cost per mile, and if he can afford to run at $1.75-$2 and pay his bills, then more power to him. He's the ONLY one (carrier) that I've seen post his rate on here. How many shippers/brokers post that they have loads on here with a 'great rate', and when asked what the rate is, they immediately shut down and respond with 'email or call me'... Whats the secret here with your great rate? When I did ask a broker about what the 'good rate' was they mentioned in the post (onion loads out of Washington to California), it opened a can of worms with arguements and the broker finally saying that they didnt even know what the rate was yet.\n \n Anyhoo, I commend Michael for advertising his rate on here, having the brawn to do it (in place of a more appropriate word), and trying to grow his business. For the ones that always post 'just tell the broker/shipper 'NO', how about giving insight on HOW to negotiate for better rates? Of course, that is not saying a tremendous amount. There is money to be made hauling all kinds of loads. I think that the whole system is messed up and we all as truck drivers and owner operators will be the ones to fix it if it gets fixed. So yes, we all need to stick together on this issue. The brokers are making the money right now. That is obvious. I have said no and that I will not haul certain loads so cheaply and if I am going to go broke with no work at least my truck will not be broke(warn out) as well. I have picked a fair happy medium for me and I set my rate. If I am being dispatched by another trucking co. or a broker and I do not like the rate and I refuse to take it , then someone else will. I have to decide if it is worth it now and in the long run. I hope I have not offended anyone and I thank those of you that commended me. I am not trying to be a cut throat out here in this business. I want to get paid as much as I can per mile and make enough money to support my rig and my family. Right now the average rate per loaded mile for a hopper load is $2.00 a mile. This is loaded mile. If you can get reloaded close to where you unloaded and start again you can do much the same and the next load and so on. Most of the time though, you have to dead head to the next pick up location and it is quite a ways away or you have to dead head back to where you picked up the first load and start over going back to the same place. The shippers and brokers say the load is by the ton or by bushel or by pounds but it is all figured by the mile. If my truck is rolling, loaded or empty I need to get paid. The shippers and brokers are betting that you are hungry for loads and that you will take them. They know you have to eat, make your truck payment and pay the mortgage, or put your kids through college and you will take the loads under pressure and if you will not take it some body else will. Michael Lee LRC Trucking Based in Goldsboro,NC. 40' x96" x 66" Timpte Hopper bottom. Looking for Hopper loads that are picked up in NC,SC,VA,or GA and delivered back into the NC area. I can also pick up in NC and deliver to NC,SC,VA,or GA. My rate is $1.75/mile for all miles both ways.
