They all said either no or they would ask me to spot the cab fare home so they would not be stranded. It is my company and I will get the rate and margin that I need or I won;t move the trucks.\n \n Beings all of our drivers are on percentage they like the fact that I get the most money for each load that we haul. So for all of you that keep saying that I don't know what our numbers should be. You still have not put up any realistic numbers like at leastwise Jason and I have. Don't come back with some BS that you are getting $4 - $6 per mile for all miles I already know better.\n \n I have a database that I pay for and look at the rates as they are posted in each and every market to the government. So if you want to make up crap and be a jailhouse lawyer then you go right ahead. I can tell you pretty much what each and every sector is doing on rates. If you boys think that deregulation really occurred then you are misinformed, the government still regulates the maximum that capacity carriers can charge. If you are a spot market carrier like I am then you charge what the market can bear. \n \n I don't have any idea as to Jason's overheads or any of yours as well. I know what mine is, if you are paying $2500.00 for that new truck and another $1000.00 for insurance on that truck, $800.00 for that new hopper and $200.00 in insurance for that hopper per month on each. Then you will have to have more money than I will for my older trucks that are well maintained and just keep on running and running. I only buy new trailers not new trucks, new trucks are a total waste of money. He knows that is the only way our trucks will go to FL. Those are the only two times we got there. We haul his trailer in drop it off and bobtail back to KC, so in some unique circumstances when you provide the right service the customer is willing to pay. \n \n Last year he had a guy pull it for $4.00 per mile and he called me up apoligizing for using somebody cheaper. I told him thats OK, my rate is still $6.00 per mile subject to change because of the demand for our trucks. I believe in quality not quantity, that goes for every aspect of my business.\n \n When we were running bulls we were getting between $3.50 - $5.00 per mile all miles using the cattle brokers trailer. I thought that was more than fair, when the rate fell to $3.45 per running mile, we washed the trailer, put fuel in the truck deadheaded to his office and returned the trailer. I told my friend that there was to much risk involved to haul cattle for any less then $3.50 per mile, he understood and thanked me for my service and said he would call me back when the rates came back up.\n \n When I am talking the high rates that is what we charge to go to places that we don't want to go to in the first place. So our rate for Ty*** is $6.00 per mile no questions asked.\n \n When I was a kid our neighbor was making around $4.00 per mile ($2.00 per running mile) that was back in the 80's. So I am not understanding how over the last forty years trucking has slid backward not forward. \n \n Oh that's right it was the truckers/brokers that said they would do it cheaper than the next guy. The shippers have had a big laugh over this one, so just who do you think was pushing for deregulation in the first place? 1. Truckers, they could not wait to try and screw each other. 2. Shippers because they knew that truckers would run in and chop down the rates just to make a buck. Once they got rid of the big 3 rate houses than it was easy picking. When I was the shipper I just added 15% to my shipping cost to my customers, I never expected our carriers to take a deduction on their rate to make me more profit, that was back in 1996. Imagine my surprise when I came back into trucking in 2008 and found out it had flip flopped and the trucker/carrier was making the same or less then they did in 1996 or the 80's. We are just trying to recapture the market that has been robbed from us, so if you think I am going to tell the rest of you truckers where I am getting these rates, sorry I have learned that you will come in and try to undercut me. THE BROKER IS NOT THE PROBLEM THE TRUCKER IS!!! The broker does not have any equipment most times to offer the shipper, they are just trying to locate equipment to fill the needs of the shipper. A good broker will add their service fee onto the truckers freight cost, a bad broker expects the trucker to absorb their service fee and not cost the shipper any more money. Do you see my point?\n \n When I built houses my rates were $150 - $185 per square foot. My contractor freinds were building for $90 - $100 per square foot. Which one of us was smarter?\n I was building 10,000 + square foot houses, while they were building 1000 - 2500 square foot houses. It is true that they were building 10 houses to my one, but in the end I was making at least $50 per square foot more than them. $50 X 10,000 = $50,000 more than them for less work, less risk, and projects that were featured in magazines across the country. Who do you think the wealthy and rich kept calling to build houses for them? People do not mind paying out the money for better service and higher quality. QUALITY VERSUS QUANTIY!!! Most of the other contractors went bankrupt when the market fell, not me because I did not have money laying around on land, spec houses, or in brand new equipment like they did.\n \n I am using the same principle in trucking, when I was a contractor a customer called me and said that another contractor could build his house for $125 per sqaure foot. I told the customer let him build it, me and my crew would just sit that winter out. Three months into the project the customer called and asked if we could come and finish the project, I informed him that the cost was now $200 per square foot because we would have to fix everything the other guy screwed up. He agreed, we fixed the problems and finished the project and all was happy. This is what we are doing in trucking, we are a mercenary company. When the rest of you guys say you will do the job cheaper we just step back and say they can have it. When you screw up and the shipper is calling us to fix the problem than it cost even more then if they had stuck to our original rate. So for you to think that we do not pull down $5 - $6 per running mile from time to time. Well just look around the truckstops and mills, that should answer the questions for you. He knows that is the only way our trucks will go to FL. Those are the only two times we got there. I'm confused

a front page article says they're saying that shippers are bowing down to carriers and paying morel but yet there's people on the job section wanting to pay trucks 1995 prices I guess the shippers don't realize that the brokerl still trying to screw us. I might be wrong but who would drive a truck for a broker for $2 a mile that is insane to even think that a truck can go down the road for 2 dollars a mile for what 2 or 3 months to the guys bankrupt bullshit.
