Rates are determined by competition, and no one can run a truck cheaper than a farmer, becuase to him the truck is just a tax write off for the farm, it doesn't have to make money, and thats what we will compete against. As we see our revenue decrease with miles,we will go broke, and its the farmers that will buy our trucks, until the farmers are the only ones left in the market. We make 100% of our revenue off the truck, while the farmer makes his off of the farm. Even the big boys like swift and schnieder, cant compete against a farmer. The farmer can park his truck 8 months out of the year, and still be profitable. Some farmers have one truck, others have a fleet of trucks, and more and more are getting authorities, and brokers bonds. If a farmer is losing more money on trucking overall than he will have to spend sub-contracting the loads out during harvest than he will not be in the trucking business very long. NO business simply buys assets that will inevitably lose money simply to save money on taxes. SInce taxes are only paid on profit what would the point be? Short haul harvests have and always will be done to some extent by farmers. Of course that makes sense, but to say they can run trucks for a lower operating cost is not true. Nothing new with this and money has been cheap which only speeds up this trend where market share is seen to be the only real growth. There is alot of concern about the ELD's by all of us and all i can say we shouldn't have to work 20 hour days to survive and i am willing to try something new that might shine a light on the amount of wasted time truckers spend. A typical load of corn is only valued at $3600.00 and if you expect the customer to pay you $2000.00 to move it, well they would be going in the hole for you to move it. It would be better for the farmer to be forced to move the shit themselves then they would not have the time to farm as much. When I realized the small value of the bulk products it was then that I parked the hopper and only move it when it can make more margins than my dry vans. The typical load that goes on my dry vans are valued at $100,000 or more, no wonder I can get a higher rate for less work, and I can tell you that there is more supply of trucks hauling dry freight than in the hopper world. Why can I command a higher rate in a glut of trucks than? Because the brokers and shippers all know that I run on profit margins and that my truck will make it from start to finish on the gig without any problems. Yep you betcha I hear the other guys pulling the same loads as me for a loss or a slim margin. Not my problem is it? \n \n I have almost given up on the truckers themselves ever goint to make a change for the better of themselves. Stopped by the local elevator to talk to the guy that runs it to see if they had any trucking and they had beans going out for .20 for 70 miles. He asked if I wanted to haul any and I told him no because I charge myself more than that to haul my own beans over there. He said they set that rate to move beans as a backhauls rate for guys hauling fertilizer back. All of a sudden he had 20 trucks hauling and he said about half of them were running it round trip. Getting two loads sometimes 3 loads a day. I was there for about an hour visiting and not one truck hauling beans were farm plated and to haul for the elevator you have to sign a packet and meet insurance requirements. The real problem isn't farmers cutting rates. It is people who don't know how to figure profit. If they are doing it legally, there is nothing you can do about it. If not, turn their ass in, easy as that. Surviving an industry like trucking takes hard work and adaptation. We have two apportioned trucks, three hoppers that sit most of the time and two dry vans. It isn't the trucking I want to do but I'm not gonna haul hopper for a loss. This has absolutley nothing to do with operating costs. No one can do it cheaper

There is the myth out there, that Eld's will push rates up. It won't happen. Rates are determined by competition, and no one can run a truck cheaper than a farmer, becuase to him the truck is just a tax write off for the farm, it doesn't have to make money, and thats what we will compete against. As we see our revenue decrease with miles,we will go broke, and its the farmers that will buy our trucks, until the farmers are the only ones left in the market. We make 100% of our revenue off the truck, while the farmer makes his off of the farm. Even the big boys like swift and schnieder, cant compete against a farmer. The farmer can park his truck 8 months out of the year, and still be profitable. Some farmers have one truck, others have a fleet of trucks, and more and more are getting authorities, and brokers bonds. Look around at all the farm trucks you see pulling flat beds, dry vans, hoppers and belt trailers.
