Not even good steering wheel holders
Had a truck in the shop today. Right front wheel hub, literally had 2 drops of grease. I asked the driver if he checked it. "He said that was not his job, he was told to drive". I asked him if he did a pre trip."No." The truck leaked oil and he didn't know how to tell where it was going. I asked him if he knew the rules for an FMCSA pre trip and he said" HUH". I asked him if he checked his brakes, he said" that is DOT's Job". I asked him if he wanted to live? He didn't understand. If the wheel came off and he died what then? Blank stare. In the end found out he didn't even know HOW to check it or the importance. Owner came along and blamed it on brain dead driver. He was partially correct. Yes this driver didn't understand until I explained in detail, that DOT rules or not the only person responsible for his safety was himself. I was amazed. I understood, but didn't agree with the owner about education. The owner was, don't tell him, he will wake up and not want to drive my junk ass shit. This person drives for half of what I pay. I wouldn't hire him now, but I don't understand the need to be home EVERY weekend? WTF you scared your old lady will find something better? I have people call me, they make under $150 a day in a state that is expensive to live in. They will take it and their wives work and they still need Government help, but they won't take my job because they are gone to much. That is 2 to 3 weeks. WHAT have the mega fleets created?
My frustration is I don't have the budget to run an ad in a glossy mag hand out in a crappy truckstop. The job scenario I have to offer was the highest sought after scenario in the 80's, but now, F off. These idiots want to drive these Freightliner, Prostar, god forbid you pull in my shop (VOLVO) garbage trucks. There isn't ANY pride in what you do or what you drive.
Anyways back on topic. Somehow we can debate alot of items, but there needs to be a way to educate the guys on safety. I don't want Joe Scum bucket passing me or me passing them, when that ungreased hub comes off and they kill someone I love ( yes there are people I care about and hopefully people that care about how much life insurance i haven't). I know I for one assume that my guys know everything I know and that should keep them safe, but I might have a, paid for safety meeting soon, at the race track of my choice, kidding, I want me people to know right from wrong.
