Our shop is very near to UTI tech school. We get guys that are there to be a Mechanic, but they are so physically unfit for the position that it is ludicris. If you weigh 300 pounds and no one has seen your waistline in the last 12 months working on these trucks or being able to get around an open deck trailer might not be your calling. Another problem we encounter is the military person that is looking for part time work for a short time span and tells you up front that they will leave the area upon graduation. Why would any shop put time and effort into an employee that will be gone? I know you need income, but what is in it for my shop? It doesn't matter, mechanic, truck driver, indian chief, if you have no intention of staying I can't help you. It cost any employer a ton of money to train people, then your gonna leave and I start over? I don't think so. But back to the other point. If you can't fit under the vehicle how are you going to work on it. These newer trucks are closer to the ground every day. There are more delicate plastic parts that even a light weight can't stand on. I now weigh 235 lbs. Ok, I could stand to loose about 15 lbs. But I don't feel like running 6 miles each day like I did when I was 26. I have had individuals tell me that they were prior service, and I would look at them and ask them to show me their DD 214, I then would ask them how they got so fat in just 5 years. They would tell me that running a truck made them fat, I would ask them, \"then why am I not that fat?\" I expect a trucker to have a little extra around the middle because of the nature of the job. But when that extra makes them bigger than some of the bulls that I have hauled in the past, I wonder what is going on in their mind. Had a mechanic that really knew his stuff, but like you were saying Art, when I bought a couple of newer tractors for our dry van side, he refused to work on them because he could not fit under the tractor. I let him know that a membership at Planet Fitness only cost $10 per month, or he could do like me and walk 2 miles a day and then he would be able to fit under the tractor. He got pissed and grabbed his tools and left, well that's ok because my nephew who weighs a big whopping 180 lbs is twice the mechanic he ever thought about being. We live in a politicaly correct world (please don't tell me the truth, it might hurt my feelings). Trust me when I say this, the Army was testing out this crap before I got out. They were trying to make a kinder, and gentler Army, now is this what warriers are supposed to be? Kinder and gentler? My daughter is now a Sgt in the Army, she and I laugh at the other soldiers that are trained in this manner. That is why she is their boss. There is a difference between being big boned and being obese. Once this company I used to drive for gave this guy a road test with a set of sticks..he asked what's that other stick for? You leave it in neutral? The tester..ohhh yeah..and no more test.then people complain and snivel that they can't find a job except at the local Mc Donalds..then there are people like my friend who doesn't know when to shut up..he will tell you everything about why the last 10 jobs why he's not there and it was all off the bosses fault..he's the kind who would get pulled over by the police for speeding..and tell the cop..ohhh I've been drinking all night and had to speed home so I could throw up at home.. You need to go into a job with a positive attitude...dress like you want a job..and not a hand out..don't lie about what you know..tell the interviewer..I'm always willing to learn what I don't know..don't come in late..not even one second late..and good chance the job will be yours..even if you aren't an exact fit..because your willing to learn..this is a story that happened with me on my very first truck driving job..I learned on construction trucks..double tankers and bottom dumps..then the head guy could sign off your driving test..I never knew how to back up a truck..first job..it was pulling a semi van..pull up with my boss to his shipper..well everybody had good entertainmentas it took about 1/2 hour to back in for 4 days..the fifth right after i got there..walked into the office..they said go ahead and back in..told them it is..its funny how a boss will normally be a little more patient with somebody who wants to learn..and has a positive attitude..", "contentHtml": "Why is it that some employees only want it their way? Wouldn't be near the truck during loading and unloading... it was to dirty...my trainer had to load the truck. I want these guys out of the loop, but don't know how to do it. This guy took all of the paperwork and then called cops and told them that I threatened him. Cops would not intervene to get my paperwork. So I decided that before offering them a permanent position with us that they would have to run team with an observer controller. First this get rid of anybody that does not really want a job and are not team players. Driver tell me they will not run team because they can't sleep behind another driver. Ha Ha, they should not be worrying if they can sleep behind us, they should be worrying if we can sleep behind them. The next thing they don't like is that they will be splitting their wage with another driver that really is not driving very much, but is supervising them. Well if drivers could really do what they say they could and quit lying about their abilities than I would not have to operate this way. \n \n If the Army sent me soldiers to supplement our special ops team, and they came in like these drivers, they would have found themselves left out in the jungles finding their own way home. I believe that Americans by large have been sold a bill of goods that companies owe them more than just an opportunity to better themselves with a good job. While I don't mind training and helping others learn the business. I refuse to allow anybody to tear up my toys anymore just because they have a CDL. If we can't sleep behind them, or get them to learn the proper techniques so that they can be profitable for themselves as well as my company.\n \n This has eliminated a majority of the issues that I had with the previous 20 drivers. If the driver does not know how to properly run a log book, no problem we stick him on electronic logs with Keeptruckin.com. Most of them have smart phones and can play video games, so this works better for them and us as well. If they can't run long then we keep them short. If they can't run hopper then we run them on dry vans. They all know going into the game with me that if they are found in violation of their 11 and 14 on their logs that it is automatic termination of contract. Did I read correctly that you use DAC? I remeber when the industry lived and died by what they said. Seems they aren't all of that anymore, but I need a better way to background check people. I really got a bad one last week. Guy is making a lot of threats, don't know if he will follow thru. We send out request for information from past employers, but rarely get a response. We got a hopper for frac sand and wouldnt you know it, the bottom fell out. We are sticking it out. the other half grumbles about the hopper, but, i love it. People totally unprepared for any job

Folks, I would normally do anything for an ex military person or someone that is connected with being a first reponder, but be prepared for the job in some way. Our shop is very near to UTI tech school. We get guys that are there to be a Mechanic, but they are so physically unfit for the position that it is ludicris. If you weigh 300 pounds and no one has seen your waistline in the last 12 months working on these trucks or being able to get around an open deck trailer might not be your calling. Another problem we encounter is the military person that is looking for part time work for a short time span and tells you up front that they will leave the area upon graduation. Why would any shop put time and effort into an employee that will be gone? I know you need income, but what is in it for my shop? It doesn't matter, mechanic, truck driver, indian chief, if you have no intention of staying I can't help you. It cost any employer a ton of money to train people, then your gonna leave and I start over? I don't think so. But back to the other point. If you can't fit under the vehicle how are you going to work on it. These newer trucks are closer to the ground every day. There are more delicate plastic parts that even a light weight can't stand on. If I have to respring the leftside of the truck so it is level when you get in it to drive it how are going to get from the ground into the trailer to sweep it out?
