In the fall of 1992, a farm kid from Lebo, Kansas bought a four-axle dump truck straight out of high school — and drove it home without a CDL. It broke down on Highway 75 on the way back from his license test, and the first vehicle that pulled up behind him was a state trooper.

Thirty-four years later, Jesse Knight runs Knight Trucking: 30+ trucks across end dump and pneumatic divisions, drivers who've been with him since 1997, and his son Colby filling some very big shoes in the dispatch chair.

This one's personal. Jesse and I go back to 2006, hauling wheat out of western Kansas into Kansas City — he's one of the guys who taught me this industry. So we went home to Lebo to hear the whole story: the white Volvo that was actually blue, the two-year frame-off restoration of "Big Bird" (his first Peterbilt, now pushing ~800 horses), a full walkthrough of what it really takes to run pneumatic trailers, and the day J.B. Hunt — yes, that J.B. Hunt — called the shop phone and Jesse thought somebody was messing with him.

But ask Jesse what built this company and he won't point at the trucks. "The drivers are what make you… I'm just a dumb old farm kid." A man's word. A handshake is a contract. That's how they run it in Lebo — and it shows.
