The Missouri Family Running 2,000 Cattle, 2 Truck Stops, and 6,000 Acres of Lost History

Description

About this video

We came out to Mount Vernon, Missouri thinking this would be a story about cattle — 2,000+ head, one of the largest cow-calf operations in the state's biggest cattle-producing county. What we found was something much bigger.

The Wilmoth family has spent nearly three decades piecing together 6,000+ continuous acres of Missouri prairie, historic farmland, native tallgrass, and one of the most pristine remaining slices of the Ozark Prairie — a landscape that once covered a third of Missouri and is now down to roughly 60,000–70,000 acres statewide.

In this feature, Eric and Brent Wilmoth and ranch manager Jeremy McBride walk us through the cattle operation, the feedlot they designed on a napkin, the 1860s log cabin they rebuilt log by log, the 1872 Presbyterian church on their land, and a native prairie graded 9.5 out of 10 by the Missouri Prairie Foundation — full of Indian paintbrush, pale purple coneflower, and ancient Mima mounds where Native peoples once camped to hunt buffalo.

It's a story about cattle, trucking, and business success — but at its core, it's about stewardship, humility, and leaving the land better than you found it.
