I have a 579 Pete. It spent 3 of the first 4 weeks I owned it in the shop. A side wind blows right through the door so when it is below zero your left side freezes and your right side cooks. It has a 500 hp cummins. No power and poor fuel mileage. I would love to get rid of it even if I lose thousands of dollars.

I have a friend with an 2012 389 Pete with a Cummins w/ 250,000 roughly.....already doing an inframe because of a dropped sleeve causing a blown head gasket but because of the dropped sleeve, a machinist was called in to get the block/counterbore right.....no thanks, I personally would shop around for a Freightliner or Pete glider. But I'm nnot in the market cuz I have an '07 KW. Good luck on your endeavors.

Before you buy a Pete , you might want to ask what kind of warranty on the PLASTIC radiator tank? Peterbilt used to make a great truck, but over the years since they moved to Denton , the vendor products seem to be getting cheaper and cheaper. When I had mine, I had heated spot mirrors and the coating on the back that makes it a mirror, was flaking off.. I never had that before in all of my years. As standard radiator they will put in a smaller one as standard. It won't make much difference in the midwest, but come west where you need as much cooling as possible.. Sorry I don't think I would get a Pete . With the amount of the price of a new truck, you at least want one that will stay out of the shop... Also with these new engines, when a amber light comes on, don't run to the shop.. They seem to go on and off.. The red ones are the one I worry about. Good luck on what ever you get. Ohh and glider kits are something to look at.. But that VIN will tell the next owner that it's a glider, and if you go into a port.. More and more are going to require post 2007 engines. It's not just California.. The ports that I know right now will be Seattle and one in South Carolina , but you know more will follow.

Have 1 579 and it is the best riding truck that we have in the fleet. HP and MPG have not been that good as well either for the RACCAR motor. Does not seem to be good anywhere Cumnins Paccar on MPG. We have gotten Steinbaur boxes and got .5 more mpgs and 20% more power. My drivers have not complained about it since. It has worked well for us.
