Ag vs highway hoppers.

Jun 20, 2016 at 07:24 PM CST
Looking to buy a hopper. Just not entirely sure whether or not to go with highway or ag hoppers. Ideally most of my time will be spent hauling grain, but if I get slow I want to be able to take off hauling something else

A regular ag hopper is fine for grain but you need a bigger cubic foot trailer for just about everything else. You can't get enough on to make it worthwhile. A 78" sided trailer is best .

Hey Corey, i got a Tempte Hopper for sale, its 96 wide which is better for fuel economy, 78 sides, 43 long, steel sub frames which last longer if you go off road into fields, Air ride suspension, 2 vibrators, some new parts on trailer, $12000 or i would trade for a track-hoe excavator up to 40,000 lbs or a backhoe or a landoll, muvall, equipment trailer or a steel half round frameless end dump 26 - 28 feet long, Clean title in hand.

Roy I'll have to talk to my partner. Can deep hoppers clear a swing auger?

I carry some short 2x10s to pull up on just in case of a tall swing auger. I think I have used them two times in two years. I do not load off of a lot of farms though.

Since you are located in Iowa, I strongly suggest you take a look at JET in Humboldt. We bought 4 of their aluminum 80" rounded hopper models last year, and couldn't be more satisfied. The uninitiated will say, "those are grain hoppers" or "those small doors are no good", but they just don't know. We used Timpte and Wilson in the past, and the JET just does a better job. They clean out well, they are light (8k lbs), have sight glasses in the side to see what's going on in there and have 20" of clearance...I have not run across a swing auger that didn't fit under there. They are definately worth taking a hard look at.

My 2 cents....this is the trailer we have been running and the set up works great for grains, ddgs, wheat midds, and cottonseed. You might find out that running grain locally may not always be your best opportunity as you grow. This trailer weighs about the same as my first grain trailer I bought that is a 42x102x72. So I run the trailer below for everything. I have 2 of these and will not change anything on them if I get more, unless I can get them lighter.

Timpte Super Hopper. 43x102x84, net weight ~9,000 lbs. Alum subframe, super singles, disc brakes. EXTRA BIG hopper door opening which works great for ddgs and other products that can be difficult to unload. I worked with my Timpte dealer and spec'd it out to get them light. Disc brakes are awesome, I will never go back to drums. 102 wide will give an extra 6" wide on the hopper door opening. 43' long will give extra length on the doors over the 42', its a bigger difference then 12". There is enough clearance for a swing away auger.

Wilson, Dakota, Jet, Stoughton are all good trailers and probably offer the same things as Timpte. The big thing for me is local dealer service, lightweight, big hopper doors, and disc brakes. The downside is this set up will cost around $50k new, but put it with the right truck and you will be able to haul 26-27 ton easily and legally. To me it has been well worth the extra money and the payback on the extra cost is 1 year assuming 1 extra ton per load over a heavy trailer.
