This is a lot harder to hide in this community then on the van/flat operations. I agree with you not necessarily letting the world know where your customers are until they have first agreed to pull the freight for you. What is frustrating from the carrier's perspective is that a lot of brokers use bogus towns that are more than 100 miles from the actual town. Now when my truck is already bouncing 75 miles to get the load and then you add another 100 miles but expect us to haul it for the same rate as we at the point of origin. Then we say no deal. If you are willing to pay our all mile average then we don't have any problems. Hope you understand. \n \n Shippers, call us everyday because they want our trucks direct. The problem is that they think that we are going to haul it cheaper for them then for you the broker. Wrong answer, most of our broker customers give us a fair to good rate, they pay us within 10 days on the average. The shippers like to take up to 45 days to pay and use all kinds of excuses as to why they are not paid up yet. That is why we sell those notes and charge the shipper more then the honorable broker. \n \n There is the key word, honorable. Not very much of that around anymore. Good Luck with your customers and finding the right type of carriers as well. \n \n Matt: \n \n It would be better if all carrier members, broker members, and shipper members (if they have one) were required to have their DOT#'s and MC#'s posted. This would allow those of us that run honorable business's to check each other out faster without wasting time on phone calls. I often times spend quite a while trying to find the information on the shipper's and broker's in order to find out if I am even going to make the phone call about the load. We must first make sure they pay before we even entertain the thought of talking to them. Those that are dishonorable will still be trying to steal your customers. You work to hard to get those customers. We are a mercenary trucking company and are not after anybody's customers. We go with whatever load pays the most and haul for whatever customer that needs our service for the day or week. We don't want to get involved with long term capacity contracts. My drivers prefer the here today gone tomorrow approach. \n We don't believe in back solicitation of our customers, (Brokers, Shippers, Broker/Carriers) alike. I understand what you are saying, I have an account with a construction firm for heavy equipment. When I post it on another load board with the actual town, my customer/friend calls me and ask what are all these trucking companies calling him for. He tells me that is what he hired my company to do, find the best qualified carrier to haul the load for him, (we don't do heavy haul). I finally sent him to a broker friend of mine and he post the loads about 50 miles away all the time to curb the headaches for all parties concerned. There are carriers that don't understand the broker/carrier relationship and believe that all brokers are taking 25% to 50% of the profit. We both know this is not true. A good broker is making about 10% - 15% on the average, 20% on a great load on a great day. I have no problem with this, all of our broker customers pay us within 3-4 days unlike some of the shippers who take up to 45 days.
