Brokers are asking me
Over the last month I have been receiving phone calls from various brokers asking me what the hell is going on with the market? I explained to them that once the market starts to deteriate and people start getting desparte they will do anything just to try and survive. First it starts with rate slashing, then it continues to tumble faster and faster in a out of control spiral. The only way it gets fixed is the very ones who started it decide to stand pat on their rates and get smarter by lowering their cost to do the business. Here is how that starts to look.
Can't afford that nice fancy truck anymore so you go get an old beater.
Can't afford that nice fancy trailer anymore so you go get an old beater.
Can't afford to run as many miles because that old beater equipment may break down
Can't afford to have the proper amount of insurance coverages so ride with the bare minimums
Can't afford to buy new tires so start running on baldy's
Can't afford to buy fuel anymore so they start stealing it
Now that really looks smarter does it not?
I had three brokers call this week and ask us to repower loads for them for company's that have went out of business in the middle of the loads. Now in the past I have done this for these brokers when the crap hit the fan, but this time I told them to Foff because they forgot that they were supposed to keep my trucks at our established rates even through the bad times. I informed them that I had replaced them with honorable shippers and brokers during this bad time and I could care less if their freight was strewn all across the country. I informed them that loyalty begats loyalty and that by them offering rates as low as .75 per mile at times was not only humiliating but just down right laughable at best. I have grown so tired of hearing that is all I got in it, well here is the deal they don't have crap in it. They don't own trucks, trailers, have drivers, have the overhead that the independent carrier has.
The shippers are having a blast watching all of us independent carriers slash not only each other but the brokers as well. Now through in the oil field guys, add the farmers, add more brokers like Too Quirky Logo (who don't know how to properly post loads), well that is the recipe for the sewer pond that we are currently wading in. I am sure our industry has seen the cleaning of the sewer pond many times before and I am sure this will most likely not be the last one. For those independent carriers that want to do something about it email us with your information to include your DOT #. [email protected]
