Tire wear alone pays for the lift axle. They give a smoother ride with just one axle on the ground, and of course you have no wear on the brakes on the axle that is up. There are less flats because of not only one axle is up, but quite often it is the front axle that turns a nail up and the back one picks it up. Some people might argue the fact, but brakes are actually better on slick roads. With only 4 tires on the ground you have twice the weight per tire and therefor better traction. And there even minor benefits as saving on toll roads that charge per axle. I visit my wife's relatives in Europe several times a year.
