CHRISTMAS WISHES & A QUESTION ... SILENCE DOGOOD

Well, here we are at the end of a perfect Christmas, for all in the DoGood clan. First off, I wanted to wish everyone a very Merry Christmas and a Joyous & Prosperous New Year !!

If you will recall, I had shared with you that we had some 20 folks over for Christmas Eve. Well, I was mistaken, as I had forgetten, in my older years now that sometimes happens, that my grand-nephew and his lovely girlfriend were coming over. As well as my grand-niece and her new beau. And my, what a lovely couple they both made. So all in all we had 24 total, not including myself.

As I had previously stated, my grand-nephew, all of 24 yrs old and a fine strapping handsome young man if I may say so has recently become a truck driver. He had served in the Marines for 4 years and was in Iraq during that time. My, how we prayed for him and his buddies while they were there. When he returned, he just didn't know what to do, since jobs here in MA are somewhat hard to come by. And since he wasn't married yet and had been away from home while in the Marines, truck driving seemed a natural choice. So off he went to truck driving school, for his formal education. I remember him telling me, "Auntie Sil (that what calls me) this trucking thing is easy, its not so hard compared to the Marines".

As you can tell, I'm very proud of him. In fact, at times, he reminds me of my dear sweet departed Timothy. Hard working and all. Well, last night after dinner and all the presents being unwrapped and all, he and I had a chance to chat. He wanted to share with me all that had seen so far while as a trucker. I had to fight back the tears, it was as if I was watching a young boy of 5 opening his Christmas presents. The sparkle is his eye, the excitement is his voice, the joy he showed in sharing his stories. My what a young man he is.

Well, here is my question. He mentioned something about a log book and how he needs to keep track of everything he does. I guess, his version of a diary, although I'm still a little confused about it all. Well, the folks that tell him where to go and pick up and deliver, they were pushing him to get where he needed to be early.. (I hope I have all this right, I wish I could ask him again, but he's with his wonderful sweetheart down at the Cape.) He shared with me that with this log book thing that he can only drive so many hours and then has to take a break. Well, this man that needed him there right away told him to ( I think I have this right) "fudge his hours"(?). My grand-nephew was perplexed as what to do. While growing up and while in the Marines, he had learned to always tell the truth, no matter what. But this time, he was now being asked to lie about where he was and when he got there. Something that went against every fiber within him. He told his boss that he couldn't do it and he said the conversation with his boss got a little heated. But in the end, the boss understood.

I guess my question to you folks is ... Is this normal for a truck driver to be presented with? Are they asked to lie and do they do it?

It just doesn't seem like how folks should act or be. Please help me with this dilemna, as my grand-nephew is truly not sure what to do if it happens again. And he asked for my wisdom, as he sometimes does do.

Your humble servant,

Silence DoGood
