They were selling the equipment off one piece at a time, until it was all gone since it's about impossible to find anyone who is willing to buy a complete company now day's. One nice old guy told me he basically wasted his life away building up a fleet of 30 truck's and now it's time to retire and the only way out is bankruptcy or selling the equipment off and hoping there is enough left over to pay the capital gain's tax. California DEREGULTED the power and gas aka your home heating and power. They had all of a sudden brown outs, black outs, electric bills that doubled and tripled.. Enron broked electricity taking the electricity out of the state and caused problems causing big spikes in power.costs, El Paso gas got caught screwing with the natural gas flow into California causing shortages and very high rates. After seeing what deregulation was doing 4 or 5 other states were going to follow. But stayed REGULATED. Today every state has the utilities regulated.. How's that low power bill doing you? Or your natural gas bill? Or your cable bill? \n When trucking was REGULATED , everybody made money, your authority was worth money, your business was worth money. You were paid in 15 days or less and if they didn't, you could go to the ICC and they would help get your money..as there was a penalty behind the crime. But today it's deregulated.. Try taking your authority down to the bank to borrow some money on it, try selling your business, try collecting money on people like that stone company in Florida, or some flagrant broker that skipped out on you.. What's the difference between deregulation and regulation on a driver? In 1971 a leed driver was paid a dime.. Co driver a nickel. And after 43 years what are you paid? Then a new Pete was about 17000, fuel was about a quarter a gallon.. And you were getting about 50 cents a mile and as high as 75 cents depending on the freight for your company. Today a truck is about 150,000 .. Fuel is bumping 4 dollars a gallon, and your lucky to get 1.80 a loaded mile. There are no more loop miles paid on short haul loads.. And a driver just might be lucky to get 40 cents a mile. Don't forget then you got a drink and hamburger at Mc Donald for less than a buck, now you push 8 dollars or more for the same thing. That pick up in your drive way cost about 4,000 then today it's about 35000. Inflation has changed about 5 or 6 times higher.. So your truck costs 10 times more, fuel is 16 times higher, and your wages are hopefully 4 times higher...and that 1.80 freight.. About 3.6 times higher. So in other words your loosing money every single year, just due to inflation.. That's what deregulation does to the trucking industry.. But but I can start up a trucking business.. 90% of these small companies don't have a clue how much it costs to run a truck.. So they haul that .70 back haul and think they are making money. With all of these inflation figures don't even add in insurance, taxes, workers comp, social security, licensing etc. just some basic figures that I can remember. That's what you get with deregulation. You also had a better class of truck driver. Had fun doing your job and enjoyed it. Today I bet there are over 40 % of owner operators who don't own anything but that truck! live in it as their personal residence! have to eat in the truck! and if it got reposesed that truck driver would be homeless. That is what deregulation does.. Don't believe it look around at the truck stops. I am like most that don't want government in my everyday life.. But look at what a regulated industry does for you.. For every trucking company in 1971 there are less that 20 still around.. Out of the top 500 one or two are left. The next question is will you join that statistic? CNN ARTICLE (WHY TRUCKERS ARE GETTING DINGED ON PAY)

Not sure if anybody read the CNN article about why intermodel container drivers are getting same wages as fast food.They are saying that drayage companines only hire "independent operators" because then they can get around minimum wage, and discrimination laws.The peaple who dreamed that up obviously dont understand trucking or free market. We are all worth what the market will pay us for the service we provide . Owner ops in the drayage business really aren't bringing the value to the business.They typically dont have any care about reliability, safety, or compliance with fmcsa,doesn't take much to buy a worn out truck and pull somebody elses container.This may sound harsh but if somebodys making minimum wage it is nobodys fault but there own.Either lack of work ethic, ,experince, or education, but it makes the poor and hopeless feel better when the media and others blame everything on "evil big business". Shame on CNN and the labor bureau for putting out such nonsense, only to further there big goverment agenda.
