We needed a second truck during harvest so we worked a deal that would allow me to go back on the road, make 3x money he could pay me and he would buy a hopper for me to pull for him for three weeks during harvest.\n \n For me, being a single truck O/O is about diversification. Van rates for the areas I like to pull are a little soft right now. But I have 30,000 bushels from the fields next week that will pay me $3+/mile on all miles at 930 bushels a load. As that slows, van rates may be up. And I know it will earn during harvest.\n \n And by the end of harvest I should have my flatbed. They use percentages to figure rates. Problem with that is when fuel goes down you are making less money. Or when it goes up you may be pricing yourself out of the market. I know what my expenses are per mile and as fuel increases, so do my rates. I will and have sat because I could not get my rate. I know guys that think they hit the lottery if they get a rate above $1.50/mile. And then you have these fools that lease onto a carrier at less than that.
