I don't know about anybody else out there, but we are going broke. Fuel is affecting our bottom line as an Owner Operator. We are struggling to keep up with our truck, let alone pay our bills. They say prices of commodities are going up because of fuel prices, but yet so far we haven't seen any increase. Who's getting the money then? The amount cheap of loads posted daily that I watch on three different boards is crazy. Another board has had a load posted for a week that wants a team to go from the left coast to the right coast and they want to pay a whopping $1.55. For one thing a solo driver would have been there by now. I see it in our area as a combination of attitudes that are hurting the operator that knows he can't haul that cheap. I won't haul the cheap stuff, but this wait until the dumb guy goes broke thing isn't easy to wait out either. Then there are the people with good paying freight, but it only goes one way and you ask them what they want you to do and you get the thats your problem answer. Part of the problem is that no one knows the people. There isn't enough one on one interaction, It is easy for the people in the chain to not care as they don't know you or live next to you anymore. Put all of that with the big farmers doing what they are and we are done. It would be great if there was a way to list big traffic lanes and get people to work together to not let rates drop below a certain level. It might help if some of the people hauling cheap knew what the possibilities were? Unfortunately I think there are alot more of us out there. Just wish there was something we could do. We need to get the brokers to understand that we can't make it with 2/3 of the pay going to fuel. Doesn't leave enough to live on, let alone fix the truck. Having your own authority and equipment use to be a proud thing...now we are thinking we would be better off being a company driver. Our trucks need some gathering up as well. Nothing major, but we keep putting it off, because there's no money for it. A lot of our equipment is paid off, and we are still barely getting by. I don't know how anybody's surviving making payments on newer trucks and trailers. One of our guys that was leased to us let his truck go back to the bank two weeks ago. The turbo went out North of Kansas City, but he doesn't have the money to replace it. So, he's just walking away - for a $1000.00 turbo! It's a gorgeous '99 Kenworth W9, but he's tired of fighting it and working for free. I offerred to help out, but he told me it's just a means to an end, and to leave it alone - he's done. We will probably sell the hoppers, and the other trucks - get out of bulk freight altogether. It's just too tough. Keep my husband's one truck, a stepdeck and an RGN and work local. I dont always get the frieght because of my prices being to high for what they want to ship it at. The freight rates out of the Tulsa area or as high as I've seen them for this time of year. The reason being theres not much moving into that area in ok, ar, ks. so the rates have to increase to get the product moved with the smaller amount of trucks in the area, or to get trucks to come in form further away to haul the freight.\n We cause the problem with lower rates by hauling the lower rates because its easier to grab that load then it is to look for something else or to get on the phone and find the freight from the source. It is the industries problem that has created this and the shippers no where the trucks are and the rates stay low when there are to many trucks in one area.
