I found that when you started trying to run more equipment, that you ended up with more problems then it was worth. I have found the magic number to be about 5 good pieces of equipment with 5 good operators in them that understand running at a greater margin vs greater miles. You will find you and your operators will have more time to enjoy the fruits of their labor without having to put up with a lot of the BS that comes from running ragged. We downsized trucks and drivers, got rid of those that have the mileage addiction and kept the ones that understand margins as you have mentioned. We also got rid of all our used trucks and now buy new and have full warranty. Downtimes and expensive repairs have gone away and cash flow is much better now, even with a new truck loan payment.\n \n There is a lot to be said for margin vs mileage. Once I got some of my driver's to understand they run less and have more home time at the end of the week, plus they usually make more money in the end. We own 3 trucks and have 2 lease operators. That's about enough for me to handle from the cab of my truck. Too many more and you're speanding time in the office keeping everyone busy or hiring extra personel which cuts into your profit. I'm fortunate as we have two great drivers, both in their mid 60's so they're dependable and do the job right. One is my Uncle, and when he retires, I very well may sell both trucks and spec another new one for me. Our trucks are paid for with the highest mileage one being my personal truck at 530K so they should provide a few more years of service. Being small with paid for equipment is a good position to be in. I see some of our local companies that have grown to 15-20 trucks, they are buying run down equipment and hiring steering wheel holders. Their reputation isn't good as even with all those trucks, they still fail to provide service. A small well maintained fleet with good friendly professional drivers that provides outstanding service will always be better in my opinion.
