It means nothing to us, as a matter of fact when a broker or shipper ask for my MC# before we have established the rate, I reply politely have a nice day, hang up the phone and continue fishing. They are fishing for the backhaul truck, so they can offer the cheaper rate. I have stated many a time that our rates are based upon what the shipper could move the truck for themselves. They would have to pay for every mile that their truck moved and if they were lucky enough to find a load back to deray their cost then so be it. That is how it started, instead of a guy being happy with pulling round trip rates they started cutting the other guys market to make a little bit more money. The shippers and brokers jumped on board and recognized that truckers would take a load back home cheaper then they would out, hence the term backhaul was born. If you would refuse the backhaul rate and only pull for the same in all directions then the backhaul would greatly diminish. \n \n It would not matter where your truck was running if you got enough money to go round trip then who cares if freight is there or not. You got paid to run your truck dedicated back and forth from your home and back. I realize this is going against the stinkin thinkin that has been going on for the last 30 years, but if we don't start taking back what it ours then there will be nothing to take back. We are almost at that point right now.\n \n Shippers: You need to stick with making your widgets and let us run the trucks, concentrate on your bottom line and quit trying to make us asorb your losses for you. Otherwise buy your own trucks and trailers, hire drivers and do it your dog gone selves. You know you don't really want to do that because that would expose you to even greater risk then you currently have.\n \n Brokers: You need to learn how to properly bid vs. what your segment of our industry currently does. A lot of you look like a drug pusher trying to peddle cut drugs at cut prices. You would make a lot more money by taking the rate the trucker wants and marking it up vs cutting the rate. Takes a really talented driver to be able to pull that off. Or make them think about why they can't get their stuff moved..A good story about that..back in the 90s freight came into las Vegas..and if you wanted a load out..it was mostly dry wall..so the shipper got cheap..somehow the truckers got together and bounced out to Salt Lake or LA.. TQL posted tanker loads and people want in, I could go on, but there isn't enough time. This whole mega broker wanting into our industry frustrates the shit out of me. It is baffling why my fellow bulkhaulers just don't see the problem. I challenge every person that uses TQL to show all of us hard proof of a TQL bulkload that pays more than $2 per mile on more than 700 miles. I have people that think it is OK to call me and threaten my family as they don't agree with my views, but not one call to see why I feel that TQL is bad for all of us. At the sametime you have this King of Prussia dude posting for end dumps at $1.60 per mile.\n As others have said what is a backhaul? It cost me the same front, back, whatever. There is no more room for the term \"Backhaul\" than other offensive terms. I don't think that Obama will outlaw \"backhaul\" like he did with the confederate flag. I lost many a bid because somebody said they could do it cheaper, only to get a call a few months later to come fix the problem. It's time you got back up on your soapbox. A broker just called and offered $1200 for 1180 miles. I guess he ain't got word yet we're shooting for $3.21 at least, and that's our backhaul rate.
