What do we do? Trainer I don't know I don't know..never been in a situation like this..let me look it up in the company manual and see what they recommend...feel safer now? Do they not see the obvious problem here? Maybe they're too busy working on rules like increasing the insurance requirement or mandating speed limiters. Neither of those has any statistical basis of proof to increase SAFETY, which is what the S in FMCSA stands for. More of us really need to contact our elected representatives and complain about this agency running roughshod over our business, they ignore the real problem areas and come up with rules that seem to be all about certain special interest groups. I wrote to my reps a couple of weeks ago, OOIDA can get you the contact info if you need it. Many of us have been driving since the days before the CDL and are violation/accident free. We learned to drive on the farm, or by riding with an older mentor that showed us the ropes. I'm not against schools, but clearly, schooling does not guarantee anything as far as safety goes, and I'd still say that experience is the teacher. This has been tried before on a smaller scale with some positive ramifications. I would not want to be the beaurocratic fatasses who hold their thumbs on on our heads if this were to happen again on a large scale. Do not have a CDL, that are running down the highway totally over gross with those hoppers filled to the brim. Running that old Pete or whatever as fast as it will go and doing it all on Farm Tags. That has been going on since I was 14, thats how I started driving and while they may not be 14 anymore. The ones that are out there are far worse then we were as kids. When we were kids we worked harvest as long as we could keep our grades up, now with the new unedumacation system those kids better not miss a day of school so they could learn how to work.\n \n The Big Carriers are getting more and more creative to put more and more greenhorns in the seats. We have offered to train greenhorns, but when I tell them the truth about trucking they all look at me and say they would rather work part time at McDonald's than put up with the crap a trucker has to do.
