Most hopper sand hauling was done to alleviate the problems sand transloading facilities were having getting rail cars. Needless to say, that's pretty much unnecessary now.\n \n In the last two weeks I've been told of two sand haulers sharply cutting their fleets and a sand transloading facility in ND that shut the doors. With supplies still increasing, output still increasing and demand in the tank (specifically China) it'll be a while before sand demand recovers completely. Not to mention rates are WAY down. We have been hauling and are continuing to haul it at this moment. Let me tell you though, our quantity of loads have been cut nearly in half. I guess the one good thing is that our rate/ton has not changed. Customers and contracts are held close to the vest. If you want in the best way is probably leasing to someone. Some sand companies are no longer issuing vendor numbers for new carriers also. There is no dispute in the fact that sand has slowed down and that it is extremely cut throat right now. In this area, there are three or four companies that bottomed out the rates for what sand is available, so guess what, they are the ones hauling it and calling the next day because their trucks are stuck somewhere else with nothing to load them with. As for no necessity for trucks due to rail cars being available, that isn't completely true. Right now the BN is behind 3-5 weeks and the CP is behind 5-7 weeks. With farming coming up, something is going to have to give ---the rail will not be able to haul sand, fertilizer, seed, grains, etc and still keep everyone happy with delivery issues. As for it falling back to the trucks, they will want to see trucks haul it for the rates the rail will but only until enough won't do it because it isn't high enough for us to run trucks. As for the rates going back up and being available, some places are saying it will pick up slightly when crude hits $60 dollars a barrel, others say will run hot when it hits $80-$90 a barrel again. Although there is small amounts of sand moving, it is few and far between and much of it is short notice. It is also being said that in the near future there may be some southeast US sand hauling that will be happening.
