People are getting completely stupid when it comes to cutting rates. If you aren't making $ then why the hell haul it. Fuel, repairs, and insurance rates go up, and freight rates go down. California was giving a you 45,000 to update our truck, if you drove mostly in the state.. And with the containers dried up... How can your 145,000 dollar truck compete with some yahoos truck that for the identical new truck to yours for only 100,000? And they are out competing with you for work. Brokers provide valuable services to customers because they are able to provide multiple carriers, and customer only has to deal with one person. If i post loads, and they turn out cheap, and nobody will take them, i will go back to customer and ask for more money, or give back the load. It's not like we make you guys take cheap loads, we really can't. Sure, i hear much about brokers, but ultimately it's between the carrier and the customer, the broker just helps them come together. If customer gives more money, we can give more to trucker. if customer does not give enough money, then don't buy the load from me, tell me to go get more money for you, and i will do my best. Anyway they both went to work for two different big comapnies (\"AM\" & \"Eng\") Any way after a few months of being rookie drivers, they went into a lease purchase program. $832.00 per week truck lease. $.90 per mile pay plus fuel. We got into an argument about how my 4.5 MPG older truck that was almost payed for was not a smart option compared to their new under warranty trucks that got 6 MPG. My freight with a reefer at that time was $2.00 per mile plus FSC plus drop pay. Needless to say they didnt make it long. 6 mo.'s or less. Hell one of them even leased two trucks for a while.\n \n I dont and never have seen how that is a good program. What the big companies do is lease those trucks from the manufacturer at a good rate and then make money off the lease drivers payments. Then when the driver lets the truck go back to the company, they in turn lease it back to another sucker. Thats my understanding of the program. We got into an argument about how my 4.5 MPG older truck that was almost payed for was not a smart option compared to their new under warranty trucks that got 6 MPG. My freight with a reefer at that time was $2.00 per mile plus FSC plus drop pay. Needless to say they didnt make it long. 6 mo.'s or less. Hell one of them even leased two trucks for a while. \r\n \r\nI dont and never have seen how that is a good program. What the big companies do is lease those trucks from the manufacturer at a good rate and then make money off the lease drivers payments. Then when the driver lets the truck go back to the company, they in turn lease it back to another sucker. Thats my understanding of the program. I run Paccar trucks because that is what we like and we spend 3-4 weeks at a time in them so we want our people to be comfortable. If you like other makes that is fine, because my trucks aren't worth a whole lot more than your freightliner at this point. I have one truck that we have spent some money on chrome, but it is my personal truck that my son now drives. The others we keep as nice and clean and well maintained as possible, like you seem to be doing. With the area we run and the details of what we do the other fuel effecient trucks don't pay off for us. I have a T600 and it does maybe .1-.2 MPG better than my W900L's but over the course last year the difference is .1 mpg. For me, at this time, the newer trucks with their problems and add expense, I can't see it. This will at sometime soon leave me out of the California market. But the rates out of there don't support the added costs of buying an 08 or newer. An exfreind that hauls cattle sold his 09 that he bought new and bought an 03 cause the 09 was breaking him and the shoptime and lack of reliablity wasn't working. So like Jeff is saying unless some magic person is going to bless me with a big contract or a great loan we will see if we can survive without California. I suppose it is just one more personal flaw, but I can't stand owning vehicles that I can't fix myself. Our pick up trucks are a '74 and '75 Ford. I just have a problem with being at someone elses mercy. To me the reality is that we are all working to hard, with WAY to much Government interference for way to little money. I have my cost per mile low limit that we refuse to go below and I will deadhead if needed out of an area that won't give me what I want. LOAD PAY

I was thinking earlier today about some truck owners and hauling loads. If I put on some load board someplace and would publish my rate on the load as for FREE.. As in you would haul my load for free... Just how many people would call on it.. And I bet a dollar that I could get people to haul it. Then if that worked.. Do the same load, but where you pay me to haul my load.. Just how many calls would you think that I would get on these loads?
