I just hauled a load from Iowa to south east Colorado with 2 drops in Kansas that paid around $2.50 per loaded mile but then I had to dead head about 110 miles to pick up a load going to Kentucky that pay $1.75 per loaded mile. Going to Colorado usually pays around $2.00 per loaded mile but sometimes the return only pays a $1.10 or so.\n Most of the loads I haul run generally north and south like Mo to Al then back to Ks, Mo, Ia, Sd or maybe over to La. and back north. These are paying $1.45 to $2.00 per loaded mile sometimes a little more or a little less depending on the load to truck ratio in any particular area.\n \n Last year my per mile all miles loaded, empty, repair runs, personal use and even truck trading miles all added together averaged out to about $1.30.\n I hesitated to post this knowing the tendency of some people to ridicule someones else's business while never being willing to give their own information truthfully. Even with 300 galons of fuel on at another 2000lbs your at 20k. Add a 9500lb wagon and you can still scale 25 ton easily. I have no experience with end dump, so I can't help ya there. I do know that hopper freight is consistant year round.\n \n If you're doing $1.30 on all miles with your van, I'd go to the hopper. You should be able to do MUCH better, especially since it sounds like you're not afraid to get out there and stroll for a few days. Where you are located there is a lot of DDG going to Ar and lots of stuff comes out of Ar and comes north back up to the DDG re-loads. LOOKING FOR ADVICE

Looking for advice on pulling an end dump or a hopper bottom. My back ground is 30 years self employed timber and farming (livestock and hay no row crop) plus 9+ years owner/operator trucking. I pulled a flatbed for years and am currently pulling a dry van. Last year I leased to Oakley's out of Little Rock for a short time and pulled a hopper and an end dump. I am considering buying an end dump or a hopper and would appreciate any advice on which to get or if I would be better off staying with the dry van.
I have an 07 386 Pete with a tag weight of 17,950# plus an apu and live in southern Missouri a short distance from Doniphan,Mo and Pocahontas,Ar.
