In my 40+ years of trucking I've seen a millionaire go broke trucking and watched another man become a millionaire doing business with the very same shipping customers. You can pretty much write the bank off for your funding unless you have land or bonds for collateral.\n \nI'm pretty much secure now but it was a long hard row to hoe so just be patient. Since you have enough business to use another truck or 2 maybe you could recruit a couple of owner ops who can front their own expense. Charge them 10-15% of gross money to run under your authority and pull your freight with them paying all their operating expense and insurance.\nUse the money the O/O are paying you and buy CDs with it. It adds up pretty quick if they're running good. Now either pay cash or at least cash for down payments and insurance as you expand or save until you can go to the bank and borrow money against your own CDs to get 4% interest loans instead of paying 14% on equipment. Drivers don't have any vested interest in your company or equipment other than a job, that if they loose this morning they know they can be at another by noon. So like yourself they are a business and when you are a success .. They will be also.. If you leased trucks, yes you do take less of a percentage of that rate, but think of all of the extra hassles that you won't have. And you and your leasor will be on the same page. He would mess around all day to go to let's say Fresno.. Get there to late and would have to deliver the next day, so he would drive my truck to see his girl friend.. And then there was that little signal light that he knocked down in Fresno and forgot to tell anybody, until the city about 6 months later wanted to be paid... The next drive just disappeared one day for 3-4 days.. Until the post master called wanting the truck moved. And the last one was told well you can make it up in miles, and hauled cheap loads getting paid a percentage and couldn't figure out with his draws every week why he didnt get paid anything.. That was enough of the employee experience for me. One truck one driver.. And I still have to fight with myself once in a while.. But at least I know what he's up to and where my truck is.
