I have been having trouble attrating O/O to pull our hoppers and run 3 canadian provinces and 10 states. We have good rates and quality hoppers. The fact is that I have never lost anyone that has started with me. But I have everyone get their own authority, insurance, and have to handle their own operating expense and I can not get solid people to give it a try? A lot of it boils down to the fact that people don't want to go out on long loads anymore. All they can think of is having the truck sitting outside in front of the house with the chrome shining. I see that a lot in my area. The younger drivers seem to lack the drive and ambition to do the long haul and the older guys are retiring. There is a serious shortage of good solid drivers out there and if you have one that does a good job, you do all you can do to keep him and keep him happy. Location, Location, Location seems to be a problem. Not many truck are willing to be based out of central ND. Also I hear from a couple of my guys who were hesitant to come because somewhere they heard that hopper work did not pay very well. I am a small company and will have spent well over $16,000 looking for drivers and O/O it is a shame I am unable to find people.
