There are more Brokers than I can count that post loads on this board and all they do is co broker none of it originates from them so right there you have minimum two people touching that load and if you are unfortunate enough to be leased on with someone that's three people that touch your money before you get it and if you are not able to factor your own money that makes four people touching your money before you get it that is absolutely past being ridiculous. While I go shipper direct as often as possible, I do have co brokering agreements with several select reputable brokering partners. (Strictly my opinion on quality of reputation!) These are people that I have worked with for years and years. I don't broker out a lot of freight to outside people. We have 45-50 trucks that are dedicated to running exclusively for us. All owner operators and all totally free to come and go as they please. Some of the people that are running for me have been with me over 25 years.....some 6 months or so. I decided years ago to try to build my own fleet of guys that could trust me and I could trust them the same, So far it has been a pretty good thing. Prior to that I would grab freight and broker as much as I could. My problem back then was that I would have carriers that would back solicit freight that I would give them cheaper than I was paying them. Never could understand it. Why bite the hand that was feeding you? Finally one guy told me what I suspected. Get the middle man out and then raise the rate to what he wanted. It didn't work and before too long I had the loads back along with an increase in rate simply because I had the access to a lot more trucks than brand x had. While i do agree that sometimes an Independant Carrier can service certain customers better than I can, I don't think most Independant carriers spend the time researching loads in various parts of the country. Owner Operators spend their time and energy in the seat concentrating on getting from point A to point B. Thats their job. Mine is to keep decent paying loads in front of them so they don't have to spend time on the phone searching and more time behind the wheel making a living. I defer to Jason and Alfred in that their version of this business is considerably different than mine since most of my loads go long distance and from what I gather from Jason's posts, a lot of his freight is a bit more localized. Alfred's niche is something I know very little about. I do agree with his statement about hauling out of the caves. It is nasty work and if you are the least bit claustrophobic it will make you crazy. The point is that not everything works for everybody. This is not a one size fits all business. What I am doing works for me and evidently it works for about 50 other trucks as well. What works for you must work for you or you wouldn't be doing it. Owner Operators spend their time and energy in the seat concentrating on getting from point A to point B. Thats their job. Mine is to keep decent paying loads in front of them so they don't have to spend time on the phone searching and more time behind the wheel making a living. I defer to Jason and Alfred in that their version of this business is considerably different than mine since most of my loads go long distance and from what I gather from Jason's posts, a lot of his freight is a bit more localized. Alfred's niche is something I know very little about. I do agree with his statement about hauling out of the caves. It is nasty work and if you are the least bit claustrophobic it will make you crazy. The point is that not everything works for everybody. This is not a one size fits all business. What I am doing works for me and evidently it works for about 50 other trucks as well. What works for you must work for you or you wouldn't be doing it.
