These are loads that get us a short distance to barely cover the fuel so the deadhead isn't as rough. Don't let those rates scare you out though, there are a lot of shippers that are honest and will treat you well. In my case the company that I was pulling fertilizer for wouldn't even send me somewhere for under $1.80/mile- plus the longest distance I bounced was 40 miles. I called today about some loads out of north central/north west Missouri going to St. Louis. $1.00 per mile. He called it back haul rates. He said when things got busy he paid a better rate. Around $1.50 per mile. He seemed to think $1.50 was a good rate. Don't these guys have a clue of what it cost to run a truck?
