Does anyone have or know anything about Stoughton Hoppers? I am look'n into getting one but haven't heard much about them. It would be used for grain, fertilizer, and road salt. Any input would be a great help. Thanks

The shop forman at our local trailer shop is not impressed with them. He told me not to buy one. Several different salesmen have told me that Wilson and Timpte are the best hopper trailers on the market for both durablity and resale value. Not all the salesmen sold Wilson or Timpte either.

I would stay away from the Stoughton. I had 2 friends that bought new ones last year before harvest, and they both had problems. Like the sides not being straight and rivets coming out. Even the factory rep said that they were having problems with them.

I pulled a brand new one for a year. All you have to do is look at one that's loaded and you will see the sides bowed out. Six months old went in for rivets and front trap rails falling out. Oh ya, the sides flex so much the front cap came apart too. I've got a one year old Timpte and have had zero problems with it.

The ampount of money is the big thing. A Stoughton is $7-8000 cheaper the a Timpte or Wilson.

There is a reason why they are cheaper. You get what you pay for.

I have a 2005 Timpte 45 foot High Side hopper and I love it. I have pulled other Timpte, Jet, Wilson, Cornhusker, and Stoughtons and I find the Timpte is by far the best. Several times I have had over 100,000 lbs gross with it and have had zero problems. It is 6 years old now and I have only put tires and brakes on it. Never had to do any work to the trailer at all. Never had any rivets come out. I haul mostly grain and fertilizer. Everything unloads good. mine has double doors on each hopper which I really like. Also the Timpte I have has ladders and cat walks on both ends of the trailer which is very nice, it saves having to try to walk the length of a narrow top rail if you need to get to either end of the trailer for any reason.

I'm look'n for a good cheap trailer to get started. If it only 2-3 years then I'll trade for better. Maybe someone could help me with this problem. Should I get 68" or 74" sides. I can't make up my mind. The thing I worry about is side loading with a endloader getting over the top without hitting the bows.

Find someone your comfortable working with an ask what they need you to run in their operation. This may save you trading trailers several times. The other thing is maybe lease on to someone that has trailers already.
